B6 THE TAGS NEWS Thursday, Feb. 12,1998 February fun at local resorts sports shorts By Mike Stauffer The Taos News he 12th annual February Fest at Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort is planned Saturday through Monday (Feb. 14-16). Activities Saturday include a costume contest and face painting (guests in costume receive discounted lift ticket); treasure hunt, find the hidden letters to spell "clown" and enter drawing for prizes; barbecue, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., weather permitting; door PES prizes; cone race; and costume ski parade, 1 p.m.

Events Sunday include all- day treasure hunt; disc golf, beginning at 9 a.m.; barbecue; and dual slalom race, noon to 1:30 p.m. On Monday, all presidents of any group or organization can ski free. Call 1-505-587-2240. Red River's Mardi Gras in the Mountains is on for Feb. 1924.

The celebration includes a week-long party with masquerade balls, Mardi Gras parades, live music, decorations and skiing. Red River is draped in purple, green and gold. From ski races to parties and Cajun cooking, Mardi Gras in the Mountains "means fun," according to Christy Davis of the Red River Chamber of Commerce. Call 1-800-348-6444 or 1-505754-2366. The annual Taos Mountain Stampede cross-country ski races in Amole Canyon are planned Feb.

15, beginning at noon. The fun races include a 3K, 5K and 10K, and all ages are welcome. Prizes includes dinners, equipment and more. The awards ceremony is planned at La Ultima Restaurant following the ceremony. Sponsors are Taos Cookery, Apple Tree Restaurant and KTAO-FM.

Amole Canyon is located off State Road 518, just past U.S. Hill. For more information, call Taos Mountain Outfitters, 7589292. Taos Ski Valley is offering "apres ski tubing" Fridays and Saturdays, 5-7 p.m. The cost is $5 per tuber for unlimited tubing.

For tubers under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian High flyer Singeli Agnew Nearly 100 snowboarders turned out Saturday (Feb. 7) at Ski Rio for the mid-season snowboard competition. Participants came from Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Arizona, Texas and Oklahoma, with an eye on the United States Amateur Snowboard Association (USASA) national competition in Telluride, April 6-12. Trevor Patterson, special-events coordinator, said he was pleased with the turnout. "The competition has shown a steady increase in numbers and gains more attention every season.

Every year someone qualifying in the Ride New Mexico series places first or second at nationals. I couldn't be happier." Winners of a new snowboard in each category were Jesse Beck, Albuquerque; Lee Backer, Albuquerque; Josh Stienlauf, Albuquerque; Ryan Ebert, Los Alamos; Gillian Montgomery, Albuquerque; and Megan Wilson. Sponsors included Airwalk, One Track, Sims, Never Summer and B-Line, 1-800 Collect, Santa Cruz, USASA, KASA Fox, World Industries, Switch, Anarchy, Spy and Skate City. The next event is planned March 14. must sign the waiver Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area's next Moonlight Tour is March 7.

Moonlight Tour prices are $15 with rentals, $10 without and $7 when included with a day's skiing. It is not recommended for beginning skiers. This means they will attend regional camps and be considered for regional Olympic Development Program teams. Dribble time Jesus "Jesse" Castaneda, 57, is going to dribble his soccer ball from the New border south to Chihuahua City, Mexico, under the theme, "International Sun of Friendship and Unity." This international journey of goodwill and unity will be completed in 32 days. Every day of this journey, Castaneda said in a press release, will represent each one of the 32 countries participating in World Cup France '98. The route includes Costilla, Questa, Taos and Velarde.

Broomball Hotel Edelweiss at Taos Ski Valley is offering Ice Rink Broomball at its ice rink every Wednesday at 4 p.m. The cost is $3. In broomball, participants wear boots or shoes on the rink. The rink supplies goals, brooms and a ball. The event is just for fun.
