"The bones I draw are of a larger state or scale in their living form.

I reassemble them from their anatomical reference and put them into another configuration," Jensen said. If the bones are on the smaller side, the artist will first set them in clay. In addition to increasing the size of his subjects, Jensen often finds it helpful to do his work in a series. "People often don't know what my drawings are of, which is why I do them in series. Repetition is the mother of study," Jensen said.

Repetition is instructive, he said, because most people aren't practiced in studying bones. "It's not in our visual vernacular to look at a bone. Most people don't really see them because we're part of an agrarian society, where the life-death cycle is often acted out literally in our presence. Michael Tincher Drawing by Jensen from 'Wikondiwin' series, 1989, pencil on paper inflicted order, whereby we don't see the act of death, let alone the remains thereafter," Jensen said. Despite his success in a number of commercial art venues, Jensen is adamant that his true success as an artist does not lie within the commercial realm. "There isn't a lot of the commercial in what I do. I've been drawing these bones for a dogged course of over 30 years. I draw them because the modern-day people who replace the bones need to be a witness to them," Jensen said.

Despite his fascination with his subject, the artist is quick to point out, "I'm not on a death kick as some would think." As Jensen leaves Taos to return to his home in the mountains, he pays homage to the artifacts he draws by donning a necklace of road- killed she-wolf and yearling doe vertebrae. The small necklace reflects a splendor found in the painstaking contours of Jensen's mammoth graphite drawings. Maybe Jensen's drawings are moving because this artist has a deeply felt relationship to his subjects. "When we respond with our whole being, when we're not just in it for a mechanical process of rendering, something magnificent occurs," Jensen said.
