A8 THE TAGS NEWS Thursday, Oct. 10,1991 Program to aid terminally ill, families Terminally ill people and their families in Taos County will have an opportunity this month to look into a new program designed to meet some of their needs. Ellen Keith, a registered nurse and reverend of High County Ministries in Taos, said classes will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 15) at 107 Plaza Garcia for people who deal daily with terminal disease and want to "concentrate better, slow down, manage stress, modify lifestyle and overcome addictions." The program is called RISE, an acronym for Raise Immune System Efficiency.

According to Marilyn Gershwin, a founder of the RISE program based in San Francisco, that name constitutes a working title for a program that aims to help people "rise to maximum human potential." According to documents provided by Keith, RISE is a three-step health education program that offers its participants "a comprehensive, cohesive set of self- stewarding tools to help them cope with the emotional challenges of serious illness." Those who take part in the program, she said, are taught to become "caretakers of their own well-being" by becoming "better managers of their physical, emotional and spritual resources." RISE therapy, Keith said, has been successfully implemented in San Diego, San Francisco and other areas hard-hit by the AIDS epidemic. She said, however, that the process also has benefited those who deal daily with cancer, hypertension and other life-threatening illnesses. By helping those within the program to control their stress levels through meditation, proper diet, nutrition and exercise, Kieth said, the RISE process gives people command over their lives." "They are taught to assume active and responsible roles in caring for their health and sanity in ways that are scientifically sound and spiritually nurturing," she said, adding that a videotape is in production to show prospective RISE participants the advantages and stages of procession in the program. Each year for the past four years, the Taos County Parks and Recreation Department has sponsored a poster contest in the fourth grades of Taos County schools. The purpose has been to help get the message across that alcohol and drugs are no good. "The contest helps our students to become aware that drugs and alcohol destroy," said Danny Olivarez of the Parks and Recreation Department "It also teaches that as individuals, the students can make a difference." This year's winners of the Red Ribbon poster contest are Brandon Weing of Linda Snider's class at Taos Valley School in first place; Antonio Salazar of Mrs.

Vigil's class at Ranches Elementary School in second place; and Ben Garcia of Mrs. Rivera's class at Ranches Elementary School in third place. An awards ceremony is planned Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Coronado council chambers.

24. gets money for a new fire truck The Hondo-Seco Volunteer Fire Department has received $40,000 from the county commission to go toward purchasing a new fire truck. On Sept. 20, the commission unanimously approved a request from the department to allocate money from the fire ex rise tax fund to go toward the down payment on the truck, the total cost of which fire department spokesman Nick Jaramillo said would be $167,000. Jaramillo said if the district got the new truck it could become a Class 5 district, which would lower insurance rates by 10 percent on commercial structures and by as much as 15 percent on residential dwellings.

Orlando Marquez, the county's finance officer, and Jerry Lucero, emergency services coordinator, argued against giving the entire amount to the Hondo-Seco district, claiming other fire districts could also use some money. "You should survey the other districts," Lucero said. '92 Loyale 4WD 1.8 liter fuel injection engine, power disc brakes, power steering, power windows locks, stereo, 70.3 cu. ft. cargo space.
