DeVore says he uses scraps of wood and often wood donated to him, suchas redwood posts provided by Jack Zaninovich. "Some persons give me wood from old barns they tear down or trees they cut down." He says he prefers redwood but also utilizes sugar pine and some walnut. For a finish he uses chiefly sanding sealer, rubbed and buffed with oil. "Carving is a lost art.

except in the Ozarks," says DeVore. "Associations and museums are the ones trying to bring back the interest and skill. My wife, Mary Ann, and I have seen some beautiful carvings at the Pepperdine University annual showings." DeVore's first carving was of free standing animals. Then came wall types and now three dimensional items. "This year I am on an eagle kick." he quips, "I guess because it is Bicentennial." One of his unusual projects was canes, something that began when at Shirley Meadows he came upon a burn area and picked up three sticks that looked to him as if they would make canes.

"One had a skull cap on it. and I discovered natural knots for eyes and nose and then found knots that formed a necktie. Then it looked like a grasshopper, so I added legs to it." DeVore said he was ing a cane at a show in Dlnu- ba and was asked to put a price on it. "I put a $50 tag on It which scared everyone off as I didn't want to sell it. Then at the Delano Wine and Harvest Festival I was surprised when somebody bought it, and another that I put up for $100 was also purchased." There was a practical side to the making of canes, said DeVore. "1 had an uncle who needed to use one but was sensitive about a cane, but I gave him one which he was not embarrassed to use cause the carvings on it made such a conversation piece." In his wood shop instruction the carving has also come In handy. DeVore recalls interest generated in one student who had not been at all motivated by regular Shop class work and the creation by three students of a Snoopy which over the past ten years has become a type of traditional project for seventh graders in the carving portion of wood shop. Creative work of many types are hobbies for the en- lire DeVore family "and help to bring us together." Wife Mary Ann sews, does macrame, embroidery and needlepoint and is starting to learn to paint, son Tom is a draftsman and a pretty good artist, says his father, son Terry does pottery work and has shown in many art shows and daughter Tammy makes her own clothes.

Another hobby DeVore claims is collecting antique tools, and already he has a broadhead axe, antique planes, bucksaws and a set of Grant of Delano is shown with wood carvings which have brought him national recognition.
