Kring said people would sometimes steal parts off retired aircraft as souvenirs, especially from displays that are not fully assembled. "It's not like you can run down to ACO to pick up the parts," he said. "Anything that is missing, we will have to fabricate. The parts just aren't around anymore." Kring added that it will be a stationary display; volunteers are not replacing the engines or mechanical aspects to the plane, just the shell. Ridener said the project is a bit like building a kit car.

"Sometimes I almost think I'd prefer the kit car," he said with a laugh. "But in all seriousness, none of us would be here if we didn't love it. Ten volunteers with the Museum at Selfridge Air National Guard Base are restoring the rare jet, with hopes of having it back to its former glory by the end of the summer. Once it is done, the jet will be the only known F-89 restored to the C-configuration.

Roger Krings, a museum volunteer heading up the restoration, said there are only about 26 of the planes left in the world, pared down from a fleet of 1,050 when they were in use during the 1950s and 60s. Gerry Ridener, the volunteer crew chief and retired Air Force master sergeant, called the plane "a rare bird indeed." Lou Nigro, a retired lieutenant colonel and executive director of the museum, said the plane is an important addition to its collection with a long history in Michigan. "The F-89 was not only flown by active duty Air Force at Selfridge, but it was also flown at one time by all three of the flying units now in the Michigan Air National Guard, including the 110th at Battle Creek," he said in a news release. "The model is the variant that we flew here in the Guard and we still have a couple of people in the historical association membership who either flew or worked on this aircraft." The plane joins more than 30 others in the collection, Kring said. The museum was started to preserve the heritage and tradition of the Air National Guard in Michigan, as well as showcase the military units, past and present, that have been based in Selfridge.

Displays include the cockpits of an F-16 Fighting Falcon, an A-7 Corsair and a World War II LINK trainer. The museum also has a full-size World War I-era SPAD aircraft replica, C-130 Hercules and P-3 Orion aircraft. The current restoration project is anything but straightforward, as the F-89 arrived in Michigan in 22 big pieces and many little ones on three flatbed semitrailers after a cross-country journey from California.
