5 October 19, 1986 THE SUNDAY HERALD Births by llyce Reismah Herald corree pendant Six years ago Sonny Berman was overweight and a heavy smoker. "I used to weigh 215 pounds and smoke two and a half packs of cigarettes a day," Berman says. "Then one day my former boss had a triple bypass and that scared me. I decided to get back into shape." Today, the 58-year-old Des Plaines resident weighs 160 pounds and is preparing for his fifth appearance in America's later this month. But that's not all; Berman also has run a dozen other road races this year, including grueling triathlons (biking, swimming and running events) in Arlington Heights and Schaumburg.

To prepare for all this, Berman has a tough weekly routine. He runs 40 miles a week although that total may increase before a 26.2-mile marathon swims and rides his bicycle. He wakes up every morning at 4 a.m. and runs until 6:30 a.m. He then swims at the Nicholas Lattof YMCA in Des Plaines before heading off to work as a car buyer.

"It's become a positive addiction," he says. "It is very motivational to see the sun come up, feel the air on my face and see the dawn breaking. It is very spiritual." Three days a week, Berman drives to the 'Y' and, after he parks, he runs around the neighborhood. He even ran two years ago when the temperature plummeted to 13 degrees below zero and the wind chill hit 27 below. "I run no matter what the temperature is," he says.

"I even run in rain storms." When Berman first began getting into shape in 1980, he gave up smoking and started swimming at the 'Y'. Then he began to walk long distances. The following year he started jogging and, in 1983, he decided to bike ride. "When I decided to be a triathlete, I hadn't been on a bike since I was a kid," Berman says. "All this working out takes a lot of time and dedication." In.

1981, Berman started logging his running miles and recently completed No. 10,000. In the process he has worn out 18 pairs of jogging shoes. And since Feb. 1980, Berman swam 1,411 miles at the 'Y'.

Berman has competed in the last four America's and is training for this year's race Oct. 26. "I start preparing for marathons two months in advance," Berman says. "I have to get used to running long distances." Over the summer Berman completed the Amphibiamia, a four-part triathlon in McHenry. It consisted of a half-mile open mile swim, 11-mile bike ride, five-mile cross country run and another 11-mile bike ride.

Berman finished in just a little over three hours. When training for a triathlon, Berman rides his bike 100 miles a week. Besides working out, Berman also watches his diet. He eats no red meat, salt, sugar, butter or margarine and no fatty foods. He eats a lot of chicken, fish and vegetables and foods with heavy carbohydrates.

He only drinks spring water. When asked why he decided to compete in a marathons, Berman had a simple response: "Every runner wants to do a marathon. It is the ultimate." Next year Berman hopes to increase his running to 50 miles a week. "I feel fit, strong and young," he says. "I feel good about myself."
