PAGE TEN THE RECORD-ARGUS GREENVILLE, PA. OCTOBER 7,194 1 BIG TURKEY-EATING HOLIDAYS TO FALL ON POULTRY-LESS THURSDAY Conservation Program May Hurt Poultrymen. Washington, Oct. Americans won't be asked to forego turkey on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's although these holidays fall on eggless and poultryless Thursdays tinder the food conservation program. President Truman's food committee has modified the program to exclude the three holidays.

It asked, however, that the nation give up those foods on the Mondays before the holidays. Washington, Oct. (IP) Truman's appeal to Americans to eat no poultry on Thursdays bumped up against three big "GREENVILLE'S FASHION FLORIST" 102 Main St. Phone 555 turkey-eating holidays in a row Christmas and New Year's. All three holidays are on Thursday this year, but the White House says it has no present plans to make exceptions in the appeal made as part of the national food conservation campaign.

Prc.3idcnt.ia.l Secretary Charles G. Ross was asked whether any special dispensation will be granted for eating turkeys on those days. "I haven't heard anything about that," Ross replied. "That bridge will be crossed when we come to it." To a question whether there was an awareness, while the food program was being drawn up, that three major holidays fell on poultry-less Thursday, Ross replied he had not heard it mentioned. (ff) Roy T.

Turner of Oklahoma, here to inspect Pennsylvania's Turnpike, planned an audience with Governor James H. Duff to discuss details of the highway's construction. "We are ready to go ahead with a turnpike of our own down in Oklahoma," said Governor Turner, "but I would like to talk things over with Governor Duff before I go back to tell my people of your fine highway." The Oklahoma executive said last night, shortly after his arrival here, "I was very much impressed with the Turnpike and am more anxious than ever to get work started on one that we plan in Oklahoma." The chief executive was accompanied by members of the newly created Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, headed by Chairman J. Wylie Richardson. The Oklahoma delegation started over the Turnpike from Pittsburgh, stopping along the route to inspect all types of construction work, and to sample the food at one of the Turnpike restaurants.

The Oklahoma turnpike will extend from Oklahoma City to Tulso, a distance of approximately 100 miles, and will be built over ground that is much leveler than found in most parts of Pennsylvania. The Oklahoma turnpike will be the first toll road ever built west of the Mississippi River and is being constructed with a view to having the four lane highway incorporated into the national network of super-highways that are planned in the South and West. Oil City's Community Fund Dates Back to the Mid-20's (Following is a statement by Hon. J. G.

Payne, executive secretary of the Oil City Community Chest, furnished to the Greater Greenville Community Chest to explain how the community chest plan is working in Oil City. Similar statements from Sharon, Franklin and Meadville will follow.) Regarding the Oil City Community Fund Association, same was organized back in 1924, and conducted its first annual campaign for funds in 1925. That was successful as were subsequent campaigns; although during the depression years it was found necessary to materially reduce budgets of several of the participating agencies. During the war years we conducted a combined drive for the Communtiy-War Fund to meet responsibilities accepted for foreign relief. Even though we today have more participating agencies than when we started in 1925, our overall budget is about $35,000.00 less as a result of certain agencies being placed on a more efficient basis and because of revenues received from activities conducted, or support received from other sources.

Some of the initial agencies have been dropped and others have been taken on. Locally the Community Fund Association has not only resulted in more efficient agencies at a lesser operating cost, but has as well provided a more equitable distribution of public contributions for that purpose. Additionally, the one campaign a year in place of a dozen or more has been of benefit to the contributors and saved untold work on the part of volunteer solicitors. From our experience over the years we have developed a plan and method of conducting the annual campaign that does not change much from year to year and which best suits contributors in all groups, such as industral plants, mercantile establishments, commercial organizations, office buildings, etc. Emphasis is laid on obtaining contributions at places of employment with a minimum of residential solicitation.

Expense of conducting campaign, including stationery, printing and supplies and of collecting and administering of funds approximates less than of the amount raised. During the war, the percentage was materially less because of the larger total raised. I am certain we would not wish to revert to the old methods. Our Constitution and By-Laws have proven flexible enough to have met the changing conditions over the years and I anticipate they will continue to meet new conditions as they may develop. Please accept my best wishes for a successful campaign in Greenville.
