Applications for the leasing of approximately 54,650 acres in six counties, including two in which no state land has ever been offered for oil and gas leasing, have been received by the lands division of the department of conservation. The two new counties in the oil and gas field are Otsego, where 1,700 acres are being sought, and Montmorency in which 16,500 acres are listed.

New territory in Crawford county also is included in the recommendation, 3,8,00 acres in Maple Forest township and 5,400 acres in Frederic township, being listed. The largest acreage proposed for leasing is located in Roscommon county and totals 27,650 acres. The rest of the acreage is made up of 1,500 acres in Osceola county and 1,300 acres in Midland county. If approved by the commission, the land will be offered early In June and the auction will probably be extended over two days. The December, 1936, offering the largest sale on record, totalled approximately 88,000 acres.

civic organizations have announced intention of sending ions to the meeting, and numbers of reservations have already been booked. It is desired that as many reservations as possible be made In advance, in order to plan arrangements for attendance, and they should be filed early with the Ironwood Association of Commerce or he bureau office at Marquette. The association and the city are sponsor- ng the affair, and a good time and plenty of entertainment are promised. There will be no charges other the regular meal tariffs. Rains Relieve Forest Fires LANSING, May the forest fire season developed earlier than usual this year, rains during the middle and latter part of April )i-ought a temporary relief.

Records of the department of conservation up to the last week of the month show that compared to the Irst two weeks of April, during which more than 80 fires burned approximately 1,350 acres, compelling an early call for the return to duty of fire wardens and towermen, the hird week brought a decided respite. Only 18 fires were reported during his seven day period and they were confined to 67 acres. Trees Set Out In Mackinac State Forest REXTON, May near ideal planting conditions, thousands of young trees have been set out in the Mackinac state forest this spring by CCC enrollees from Camp Mackinac, the majority of whom are from large cities. About 100 enrollees, who are being trained intensively in the art of tree planting, are engaged in the department of conservation program which is under the direction of Arthur Dalton, junior foreman; Ollie Minor, semi-skilled worker; William Pesonen and B.

M. Coulston, junior assistants to the technician. Approximately 140,000 seedlings were set out during the first week of operations. Another job recently completed by the Camp Mackinac enrollees has been the landscaping of the forest headquarters grounds. "College Swing" At Ironwood Oracle Allen, George Burns and Martha Raye, whp panicked ahdi- ences In "College Holiday," head the nil-star cast of the new Paramount musical comedy, "College Swing," which will open today and Saturday at the Ironwood Theatre. In this story of a collegiate nitwit who takes over a leading American university and runa it to suit herself, the three gay clowns are assisted in their antics by Bob Hope, who climbed into the top drawer of stardom by virtue of his single performance as the master of ceremonies in the recent "Big Broadcast of 1938." The story of "College Swing" is the hlgh-geered fantasy which has always provided Burns and Allen with their most successful material. It opens in Puritan times with a wealthy old New Englander making a will bequeathing the college he has founded to the first female member of his family who passes an examination In it. The camera then slides on down two centuries and shows Oracle, his descendant, getting herself in shape for the big test.

With the aid of a resourceful young student, Bob Hope, Oracle discovers a short-cut to knowledge which would make Einstein look like a piker. She passes the examinations with flying colors and takes control of the university immediately. Under Oracle's regime, an educational revolution takes place. "Liberal education" is made "liberal" In every sense of the word, with Oracle as "Dean of Men," Martha Raye as a member of the faculty and Hope as "Professor of Applied Romance." He "applies" it to, of all people, Martha, thus forming the screen's newest love team. Edward Everett Hortoii fresh from his role as Claudette Colbert's conniving father in "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife," plays an important part as the woman-hating multi-millionaire who learns about romance from Oracle, and, what is even stranger, likes it! George Burns appears as his secretary, who is unable to vent his master from becoming entangled in the wiles of America's most novel "educator." Spring Edition Of Highway Map Available LANSING, May spring edition of the official Michigan highway map is just off the press and is available for free distribution to the public.

The Times has a supply of maps which were received from the State Highway department, and may be had without cost. Similar in most respects to previous editions of the map within the last year, the new issue has two new features. They are a simplified mileage table and a reproduction of most of the official warning and regulatory signs used on the state highway system. The map, as usual, contains the latest corrected information on the state trunklino highway system, the state ferry schedule, a table of state parks, a listing of cities with a key to their location on the map, and locations of state police posts, airports, state game areas, national and state forests, and Individual maps of the larger cities of the state. The accordian fold, first introduced two years ago, i retained iu the new editoin.

Public demand for the official highway map is indicated by the fact that 400,000 copies were distributed last year. The map can be obtained at no cost by writing State Highway Commissioner Murray D. Van Wagoner. The Pictured Rocks on the Lake Superior shore are perhaps the Michigan scenic attraction most famous la Europe.
