AMSLER, JR Lone Grove, Texas PHONE 379-2191 I Local Call HOG FEED CATTU FEED DAIRY FEED Another year has ended for the Texas Rural Community Progress contests, and a new year is beginning. These contests were originally started in Llano Sounty in 1955 sponsored on a local basis by The Llano News which offered $150 in prizes each year, in the beginning to participating rural communities The idea was to keep each rura' community active in its own right using the abandoned schools 01 each community as a center.

Schools throughout the county had been consolidated, and there was danger of rural community life disintegrating, having no cent ral interest. Three communities participates activity and outstanding re suits in the contest for severa years until their active young people grew up and were not re placed by enough younger ones However, one community, Prairie Mountain, has remained a con testant and is now starting its twelfth consecutive year, earning high placings and awards each year. The other communities which were in the contest are still reaping its benefits, however. They improved their community centers, formed a community club, and have a place to meet for rec reation or meetings of many kinds. Activity and interest within a community makes for community pride; it gives young people an to bring identy to their home opportunity to grow and to learn community, anid to be proud of the accomplishments of that community.

So whether Prairie Mountain places when the communities are judged in a few weeks, the community is already a winner for the incentives the contest has created in progress and neighborliness.
