In the latter, an article, "Couch Potatoes Need Exercise," tells the findings of a health scientist who checked the TV viewing habits of 397 high school boys and then tested their fitness levels. Sure enough, those who watch TV infrequently did "significantly better on an overall index of fitness" than did the frequent viewers. On an annual basis, children usually spend more time in front of a television than in front of teachers.

The scientist believes the lack of activity plus the bad food habits learned from the programs contribute to poorer fitness. He concluded there is a cycle of mutual interaction and reinforcement as the passivity of viewing leads to poor fitness and the poor fitness leads to less activity and more TV. But, gentle reader, we can reverse this and still enjoy our favorite shows if we heed the advice in the July 11-17 TV Guide. If you've already tossed yours, I'm leaving mine at the Harwood Library which has kindly consented to make it available at the front desk, just a few feet from the photocopying machine. One of the most appealing features: the article suggests certain exercises to do while watching your favorite program, and others that are appropriate for commercial breaks.

Since a secret to staying in shape is to incorporate exercise into our lifestyle, and most of us watch TV several hours each week, if we can make that our fitness time, we're home free. Stretching should be a daily pleasure. Try doing some with your morning shows. Get in your aerobics with those excellent programs, "Hooked on Aerobics," twice most days on Channel 5. Or just skip rope or dance to Cosby, Alf, Night Court, Golden Girls or MTV.

Remember, the Harwood is open every day except Sunday. Opens 10 a.m. and closes 5 p.m. except Monday and Thursday, when it's open until 8 p.m. and Saturday til 4 p.m.
