Taos school board approves new teachers Frutoao Lopee will be chairperson of the math department at Taoa Junior High School this year, and Dorothy Qusdort will chair the Language Arts Department. The Tabs Municipal School Board accepted the recommendations of Supt. Leonlla Serna to hire 11 teachers, a new head football coach, a secretary, and two cooks at its meeting Tuesday, July 14. One retirement was accepted, six transfers were approved and 82 persons were accepted as substitute teachers for the next school year. The new Taos High School head football coach will be Carlos Montoya.

Susan Abbott will teach science at Taos Junior High; Dennis Hedges, who was on leave, will teach special education at the junior high school. At Garcia Middle School, Christine Mondragon will teach fifth grade and Patricia Baca has been hired as the principal's secretary. At Taos Elementary School, Rebecca Corry will be a Level special education teacher. Ada Randall will be a second- grade teacher at Arroyo Seco Elementary School this year, and Arroyo Hondo Elementary will see Betty Sandoval as head teacher and Ruby Mondragon as a first-grade teacher. Ruby Archuleta has been hired as a second-grade teacher at Talpa Elementary School.

The new cooks for the district will be Antonia Mares and Rufina Trujillo. Maya Chacon has been named cheerleader- drill team sponsor. The retirement of Loretta Martinez, a fifth grade teacher at Garcia Middle School, was noted. Transfers were made, including Regina Vigil from reading lab tutor to secretary- aide at Arroyo Hondo; Libby Rae Johnson from Level teacher at Taoa Elementary to Level at Bnoa Garcia; Audrey Salasar from fourth-fifth combination teacher at Ranchos to second grade at Talpa; Diane Waltc from first grade Arroyo Seco to second grade at Taos Elementary; Mary Ann Olguin from second grade to first grade at Taos Elementary, and Gloria Clsneroa from aide to tutor, Taos Junior High School math lab. Alfredo Rael, the first American Indian to be elected county commlMioner in New Mexico, died July 1 Rael had long suffered respiratory illness and died as a remit of that, combined with an acute heart attack. He was 87. In 1986, Rael was elected to the post of county commissioner for Taos County as a Democratic Party candidate. He also served several terms as the Governor of Picurls Pueblo. During his tenure, the pueblo ruins were excavated, a museum constructed, and the fishing ponds were built.

He was also involved with the All Pueblo Council's constitutional committee and held several other positions in Indian government. Rael was born at Picurls Pueblo in 1899. The im arovements range from $400000 for extending Salazar Road to just over $8,000 for buying and installing more street light for Pueblo Sur. The town's total operating budget comes to about $6.5 million with about $5.2 million of that going for operating programs and the rest for capital improvements.

About 85 percent of the budget will be firanced through gross receipts tuxes. The rest of the money comes from miscellaneous revenues. The largest spending will be almost $lTmillion in the street department. The next largest budget within the town is public safety, the police department, which will receive about $758,000. The finance and administration department will receive about $425,000 and parks and recreation about $353,000.

The smallest line item in all departments is the elections department, which has $4,000 set aside. Other department budgets include: -Executive-legislative department, $159,349. -Judicial department (Municipal Judge), $49,837. -Fire department, $224,944. Harwood Library, $131,267.

Oldest daughter Mable Tree lives in Ignacio, Colo. Florence Carter is a resident of Arkansas City, Kan. Other surviving children include Joseph Earl Rael of Bernalillo; Eagle Rael of Taos; Tio, Ivan, Larry, and Sandra WhiteHawk, Rael-Cade and Karen Rael, all of Picurls Pueblo. Alfredo also left grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A traditional Picurls funeral took place at the pueblo.
