2-B vilK lliitu Friday Morning, February 22, 1980 LM banquet set tonight LA MARQUE-Nobody will be eating cherries tonight at 7:30 In honor of George Washington's birthday because barbeque is on the menu for the La Marque Winter Sports Banquet. In fact, it's highly unlikely ole' George will be considered for any of the awards handed out by Athletic Director Bill Bundy. Nope, this evening Is for the La Marque athletes, their families and friends. It all takes place in the La Marque High School commons. Sponsored by the Cougar Booster Club, the banquet has Ben G.

SPECIAL GROUP FAMOUS BRAND MEN'S SHOES AS A JEST, these two Kansas City King basketball fans don hardhats during the re-opening of the Kemper Arena in Kansas City Wednesday night. The arena's roof collapsed June 4 of last year during a torrential rain and heavy winds and the game Wednesday night was the first in the arena since repairs were made. Fats in right Cubs' Thompson putting on more weight this season CHICAGO (UPI) Scot Thompson says he isn't going to be shy about asking for an extra roll or piece of cake when he sits down at the dinner table at the Chicago Cubs' spring training camp. Thompson was a prime candidate for rookie-of-the year last season when his batting average was in the and the Cubs were still in the Eastern Division pennant chase.

But Thompson's slide mirrored the Cubs' downfall last season. The Chicago rookie, after an horrendous September, finished the season with a .289 average. The Cubs, after being only one-half game out in late July, finished the season in fifth place. Thompson received some notice in the rookie-of-the- year balloting but agreed that Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Rick Sutcliffe deserved the award. "He had the statistics and had a great year," Thompson says.

"He deserved it. If I hadn't slumped at the end, well, who knows. It won't happen again this year." Thompson blames most of his late-season problems on a 21-pound weight loss, which may have been caused by the rigors of playing every day and playing in the daytime at Wrigley Field. "I'm not going to have that problem this season," Thompson promises. "I will be much stronger and will have more weight to burn off once we get into the dog days." One year ago, Thompson was just hoping to make the Cubs' 25-man roster despite a .326 average the year before in the American Association.

He enters spring training this year as the regular starting rightfielder for the Cubs. His preparation for spring training has changed. "I was just hoping to make the team last year, but this year it's different," he said. "I've worked hard on the weights during the winter to try to build myself up." In addition to the weight training at his home in Mars, Thompson says he will come into camp heavier than usual. "I like to eat, so it hasn't been all that difficult putting on the weight," he says.

"I'll eat it if it's on my plate. My wife is a good cook." Thompson scoffs at the theory the Cubs always fold in the late summer sun at Wrigley Field, where only day games are played. ''The season is a long one and unless you are prepared for it both physically and mentally you can get tired and the season can seem very long," he says. "But I don't think you can say the Cubs have a disadvantage playing games at day. The sun is just as hot for the other team is it is for us." Another Thompson change will be for the Ball to try Falcons for third time Monday night knowledge he will not have to try to beat out a veteran for a starting spot.

Last year, veteran Bobby Murcer was the starting rightfielder and it wasn't until Murcer slumped in May that Thompson was given the opportunity to play regularly. Murcer was eventually traded to the New York Yankees and Thompson, a left-haded hitter, was the starting rightfielder. He had to share duties with Mike Vail, a right-handed hitter, but Thompson is likely to be given a shot at facing both right-handed and left-handed pitching. "Sure, it makes a difference when you are going down there knowing you've got a place on the roster instead of worrying whether you are going to make the trip back north," Thompson says.
