LACKOSSE. The toplo of the week has been Williams town's great win over undefeated Malvern. Malvern had won all their engagements with such remarkable ease that defeat seemed to be out of the question. The Interest created now is all for the good of the game. Wll-llamstown's victory was all the more unusual since they were without five of their regulars, so well did the reserves acquit themselves that the selection of future teams will provide a big problem for the seasiders, and It will be interesting to see who will appear for thein to-day against Camberwell.

The latter have given several disappointing games recently, but are always a formidable aide on metr own ground with goalkeepers of the calibre of aicCorkeU and McNeil age on opposite sides low scoring should remiU. Anoinei keen game ahould be that between Malvern mmu anu muca aepenas upon tno per itonei of the former. Seattle, their captain, will be aa absentee for several more games owing to a knee injury, and they will also be without the services of brierlcy, their goalkeeper. This game may have a big bearing upon the leadership of the senior section. Snould Malvern suRer defeat they will share flrat with naul fluid, anri th ohnliatitfo right will also be at atake.

Coburg are pro v. ing me surprise team oi tne season; tnoir recent form doe tint warrant anv torimin fnnri of a check at the hands of the Melbourne High School Old Boys, but with both sides stroug in aeienaive piay low scoring enouio on the nrdrr nt the dnv. Ill, aculltra lor all racea at and cMtawdin, or iind by Hurdle Race Event To-day. SMALL FIELD, BUT SELECT. Nyerimilang and Baany Favored. Selection, by Taaruan. slnco entrlea were taken for the Qrand National Hurdle race, which -U to bo fdecldcd to-day at Flemlngton, alxty-three candidates have flsuratlvoly "(alien by the wayside." Of the seventy-two hurdlers nominated from various parts of the Commonwealth only nine remain to con test the three-mile race over obstacles.

But those who have survived the necessarily searching preparation constitute strong selection one that might possibly have been Improved had Belar and Lyn den, who ran first and second respectively last year; Zygon, who, nigh on twelve months ago, created almost a sensation, as well as a record, by his runaway Doutta Hurdlo Race victory; and others like Bayacre, Kunama, Dunkeld, Dungan- ncn, Bay of Biscay, Sarokos, Oldhome and Sea Castlo come successful through the preliminary testa. Yet It is one, as now constituted, that should provide patrons of the V.R.O. fixture with a thrilling race. Two other Jumping races and four events on the flat promise keen con tests, too, and a full and enjoyable afternoon's sport seems assured. National Candidate! Discuuad There need be no doubt which of the select nine will carry tho greatest amount of public confidence and money.

Baanya Is cast for the leading part ln this equine drama, and has well earned the honor. year, with only 9.7 on his back, ho failed to do better than finish third, five lengths behind Lynden, who, tn turn, was six lengths to leeward of Belar, the winner. Belar, who carried 1 lb. less than Baanya on that occasion, proved himself far above the or dinary, and in chasing him for the greater part of the Journey until, ln ef fect, he could maintain the chase no longer, Baanya performed a heavy task. Baanya has Improved with age.

His performances In handicap company show that. Ho Is at the moment the best middle-distance performer on the fiat in this State, just as he Is the best hurdler racing, but this has to be con sidered, he. with 11.2. or 23 lb. more than he failed with last year, has been handicapped in accord with his reputation.

If he Is a 23 lb. better horse than last year, he should, on the assumption that there is no hurdler of Bclar's call-bro opposing him, Just about take the trick, on mis recKoning ne nas a nara, but. by no means, an impossible task. But, recalling how, alter meeting trouble when Royal Challenge fell in front of him, causing him to lose considerably more than half a furlong, Nyerlmllnng. In tho V.R.C, New Year's Hurdle Race, linlsliod brilliantly enough to run fourth like a true stayer the King Ingoda gelding, with the tongue-twisiing name, can be expected to be doing better than the Tasmanlan champion over the lost hall mile.

There Is no disguising the fact that Baanya tired very badly last year, and, though he can be expected to do better now, Nyerimilang, whose knowledgeable trainer, H. W. Oabell, is decidedly hopeful, will probably trouble him, Sub Rosa Is another who, it not left too far. behind in the early stages, should be running on, with a chance, over tne last nit. Will Prismatic Stay Mr.

J. Phillips, who won the Caulfleld Cup with Oaihe Carrlngton. will be re presented In the big race by Prismatic, and C. T. Godby, who trains this Rosen- dale gelding, makes no secret of the tact that he expects to saddle up an other winner ln him of an Important event: Prismatic won the V.A.T.O.

Too- lambdol Hurdle Race- by four lengths from Prime Seal, with Star God third, so convincingly that he came into favor ail a Orand National candidate with a bound. Prismatic has to his credit an A.J.C. Hurdlo Race, ot two miles and three furlongs, but this, notwithstanding, Sydney racegoers are not enamoured ot his National chance, and declare that If he can win the three-mile race form ot hurdlers in Melbourne has deteriorated rather than Improved. But Godby thinks otherwise, ana so do many other good Judges. Prismatic, like Baanya, Is possibly Improving with age, and creden-tlallcd as he Is by those who should know best, he must be included amongst thoso candidates with first-rate 'Dronoects.

it Mrs. p. o. Hay ana ner advisers think Prime Seal more worthy to carry her colors than Oldhome, he must have at least an outside chance, while there is no denying the worth of Sllvlon, who, with a win and four ulaces in his last-livo starts, and with, only 9.2 to carry, may oe me uesi ot tne mm weignu. it mav be unwise- to denv Wayback a chance because he performed so poorly last Saturday at Wllllamstown, yet, after that display, It Is tlllllcult to tancy mm, Willie neither Our Comet or Lanlrol have dono sumclently well -in recent outings to re commend tnem.

The Minor Events. Racing is to commence at 1 p.m. with a maiden hurdle race, which is distinct from a similar race held at Wllllamstown In that Is at fixed weights, and not a handicap. Mystic Peak Is trained by E.
