I 6A THE BELLEVILLE TELESCOPE, Thursday, March 8, 1979 Boy Buffs Reach Semis Of Sub-State It took the Belleville boys basket- ballers about six quarters to find their game again, but when they did it resulted in a demoralizing loss for Lindsborg that allows the Buffs to advance to semifinal action at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Gypsum sub-state Class 3A tournament. Belleville finished the season at 13-7 before entering sub-state play against Lindsborg Tuesday, March 6, when they came off 56-49 winners. The fourth quarter was not that close as coach Richard Ross chose to empty his entire bench for the final five minutes. But on Friday, March 2, the Buffs were embarrassed by an inspired Minneapolis team that earlier this year had been edged by the Buffs in the semifinals of the Crossroads Classic tourney in Belleville.

Belleville seemed fiat the entire game as they were unable to stop the Lions tandem of 6-3 Martin Crosson and guard Mike Wedel. Buses to SE Saline Buses will be available for the public to ride to the sub-state basketball semi-final game for the i Belleville High boys Thursday in Gypsum, says Jim Jensik, Belleville High activities director. Those who wish to ride the buses need to contact the school, phone 913-527-2281, or sign up at the school by noon Thursday, March 8. The game is against Osborne at 8 p.m., with the winner ad: vancing to the finals at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 10, at Gypsum. The Buffs may have been affected by the excitement of Sweetheart Night activities Friday, but at any rate the first Bridgman Third Scoring Lisa Bridgmand of Belleville finished thrid in the regular season NCKL scoring race behind Folta of Chapman and Francine Martin of Clay Center, as the top two scorers finished with of a point.

In boys basketball scoring in the North Central Kansas League Brad Lichtenhan of last place Wamego was first with an 18.6 average. The Buffs, who make extensive use of their senior-laden bench, had Bruce Deterding with a 10.0 average tops in 16th place, immediately followed by Doug Doubek with a 9.9 average. In the girls scoring Foltz had a 15.944 average over 18 games, scoring 287 points, while Martin scored at a 15.937 clip with 255 points in 16 games. Lisa had a 14.7 average with 220 points in 16 games. Second in scoring for the girl Buffs was Michelle Levendofsky, 16th in the league with a 7.4 average and 119 points in 16 games.

Next wad Debbie Finley with 23rd place on a 6.7 average with 67 points in 10 games. In rebounding Russell of Marysville was again a percentage points winner for the girsl with an 11.937 average with 191 caroms in 16 games. Karsl of Chapman was second with 11.888, 214 in 18 games, while Bergren of Marysville was right behind at 11.7 Lisa led Belleville at ninth in league with an 8.5 average with 128 rebounds in 15 games. Michelle was tied for 16th in league with a 5.8 average for 93 rebounds in 16 games, and Debbie was 20th with a 5.3 average. quarter saw them missing the basket from all ranges while Crosson seemed unable to miss.

The Minneapolis big man also was intimidating underneath, blocking several shots. Despite 15 points each from Mitch Wulfkoetter and Mike Tuma and 12 from Bruce Coons, the Buffs could not catch up in the second half, losing 75-65. Against Lindsborg the first half was not memorable either, as a team with a losing record led the Buffs after one quarter and were down only 28-25 at half. But in the third quarter the Buffs came alive, hustling with a full court zone press to establish a 10-point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Lindsborg sagged badly after that, committing careless fouls and turnovers.

Leading Belleville was Wulfkoetter with 12. Belleville now plays in the semis against Osborne at 8 p.m. Thursday at the SE Saline gymnasium in Gypsum. If they win they will play at 8 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the Sacred Heart- Ellsworth semi on Friday.
