Carter was forced out of bounds on the play, but UN Photo Michigan went on to win the Big Ten contest, 31-17. Michigan handles Spartans ANN ARBOR, Mich. (UPI) Wide receiver Anthony Carter set up two touchdowns and scored a third Saturday, establishing three records and tying a fourth in the process, to lead Michigan to a 31-17 Big Ten victory over winless cross-state rival Michigan State. The victory improved Michigan to 3-0 in the league and 3-2 overall while dropping Michigan State to 0-5, 0-3 in the Big Ten.

Carter thrilled the crowd of 106,113, second largest ever to see a college football game in the country, by ending the third quarter with a 14-yard touch- Big 10 down reception from quarterback Steve Smith to make it 31-3 and equal the school record for TDs (34) held by Rick Leach. He set a Big Ten record with his 31st TD catch in league play. Carter caught five passes for 123 yards in the game and now has 134 receptions in his four years another school record. The 5-foot-8, 155-pound senior made a brilliant 51-yard return of Ralph Moj- siejenko's first punt of the game to set up the Wolverine's first touchdown, a 2-yard run by Smith that made it 7-0 with the game only 5:40 old. The punt return gave Carter 781 career yards in that category for another school record.

Smith also threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Craig Dunaway and tailback Larry Ricks had a 7-yard touchdown for Michigan, a score set up by a 14-yard Carter reception. 'All Haji-Sheikh also kicked a 27-yard field goal for the Wolverines. Michigan State was held to 10 net yards and no first downs in the first quarter. The Spartans made two sustained offensive thrusts until the fourth quarter, the first culminating in Mojsiejenko's 31-yard field goal 1:55 from the half. Michigan State produced two fourth- quarter touchdowns as quarterback John Leister completed 14-of-15 passes at-one point to produce to long touchdown marches.

Northwestern 31, Minnesota 21 PVANSTON, 111. (UPI) Rickey Edwards ran for 148 yards and Northwestern's defense set up two touchdowns Saturday to lead the Wildcats to a 31-21 upset of Minnesota. It was Northwestern's first Big Ten conference victory since 1977 and only the second win in three years for the Wildcats. Trailing 21-10 at the half, the Wildcats shocked the Golden Gophers with an 00-yard touchdown drive to open the second half and held them scoreless for the final two periods. Edwards ran 20 yards around left end for the score and Rich Salvino's conversion made it 21-17.

On the third play of Minnesota's next possession, Northwestern linebacker Mike Guendeling intercepted a Mike Hohensee pass at the 22, returned it to the goal line and fumbled into the end zone, where linebacker Rich Raffin recovered for the go-ahead score. Raffin set up the final TD with 4:35 left in the 21-point third quarter by intercepting Hohensee and returning 27 yards to the Gopher 37. Eight plays later, freshman Wildcat quarterback Sandy Schwab snuck in from a yard out. Edwards carried for 14 and 17 yards in the drive. Minnesota opened the scoring on an easy 45-yard touchdown drive set up by a Wildcat fumble.

Tailback Alan Reid ran in from a yard out. Northwestern then drove 56 yards and Salvino kicked a 41-yard field goal to make it 7-3. Hohensee passed 3 yards to tight end Jay Carroll early in the second quarter to take a 14-3 lead and his 1-yard TD run made it 21-3 with 4:48 left in the half. Northwestern got back into the game as Gopher freshman Steve Mullholland centered the ball over the punter's head to the Minnesota 6-yard line. Schwab passed to tight end Jon Harvey for a touchdown on the next play with 50 seconds left.

Wisconsin 6, Ohio State 0 COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPI) Wisconsin drove 80 yards for a touchdown the first time it had the ball and a stubborn defense, helped by a driving rain, made it stand up for a 6-0 Big Ten victory over Ohio State Saturday. The triumph for the Badgers, 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference, was the first for Wisconsin in the history of Ohio Stadium and its first in Columbus since 1918. It also was the third straight loss for Ohio State, 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Ohio State drove the opening kickoff to the Wisconsin 8, but on 4th-and-6 freshman Rich Spangler missed on a 25-yard field goal attempt. That was as close as the Buckeyes came to coring all day.

Wisconsin then marched 80 yards in 14 plays for the only score of the game, with tailback John Williams going over from the 1. Ohio State defensive tackle Jerome Foster blocked Mark Doran's conversion attempt. Key plays in the scoring drive included a 15-yard run by Chucky Davis, a 12-yard run by David' Keeling and three passes from quarterback Randy Wright to Tim Stracka, Jeff Nault and Al Toon, the last one covering 12 yards to the Ohio State 1. Ohio State got to the Wisconsin 33 early in the second quarter but Spangler's 50-yard field goal attempt hit the crossbar and bounced back. Wisconsin was offside on the play and his second attempt, from 45 yards, was wide to the left.

Wisconsin got to the Ohio State 13 midway through the third quarter but Doran missed a 30-yard field goal attempt. and then rolled right to hit Murphy for the score with 11:13 left in the first quarter. Less than a minute later, defensive back Charles Armstead picked off a pass from Campbell and ran 36 yards for the touchdown to help Illinois to a 14-0 lead with 10:29 left in the first quarter. A fumble by Eason at the mini 28 set up the Boilermakers' first score. Campbell threw a 9-yard pass over the middle to tight end Cliff Benson, but kicker Tim Clark received a bad snap and the extra point failed.

Iowa 24, Indiana 20 Illinois 38, Purdue 34 CHAMPAIGN, 111. (UPI) Tony Eason fired four touchdown passes, including a 50-yard bomb that gave Illinois the lead in the fourth quarter, to ignite the 19th-ranked Illini to a 38-34 Big Ten victory Saturday over winless Purdue. Eason completed 28-oMO passes for 358 yards to lead the Illini to their fourth Big Ten win against no losses. Illinois is 5-1 overall. Eason threw touchdown passes of 5, 8, 3 and 50 yards.

Purdue, which scored three of its touchdowns after capitalizing on three Illinois fumbles, dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the Purdue was leading 34-31 midway through the fourth quarter when Eason, on the third play of the Illini's possession, threw a 50-yard touchdown bomb to Mitchell Brookins, who caught the ball between two Purdue defenders on the 1 and fell into the end zone for the winning touchdown. The Boilermakers threatened late in the fourth quarter when they started on their own 3 and drove all the way to' the Illini 30, but time ran out as Purdue quarterback Scott Campbell threw a series of incomplete passes. Campbell completed 21-of-45 passes for 265 yards. The Illini marched 84 yards in 12 plays on their first possession of the game and scored on a 5-yard TD pass from Eason to fullback Mike Murphy. During the drive, Eason hit Mike Martin with passes of 18, 19 and 21 yards BLOOMINGTON, Ind.

(UPI) Two touchdowns by Eddie Phillips and a 63- yard screen pass touchdown by Norm Granger lifted Iowa to a 24-20 victory Saturday over Big Ten Conference rival Indiana. Iowa free safety Ron Hawley made two key defensive plays in the last quarter to keep Indiana from winning the game. He intercepted a pass at the Iowa 3 with 2:19 left, then tackled Indiana receiver Scott McNabb at the Iowa 2 on the last play of the game. The loss ruined a record-setting performance by Indiana Babe Laufenberg. Laufenberg completed 26-of-36 passes for 390 yards, a new Indiana record for passing yardage.

Iowa took the lead for good on its first possession of the second half, scoring on Granger's 63-yard run off of a screen pass from quarterback Chuck Long. The extra point kick by Tom Nichol gave the Hawkeyes a 21-17 lead. Indiana linebacker Mark Weiler blocked a punt which gave the Hoosiers the ball at the Iowa 5, but Indiana could not score on three running plays and had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Doug Smith late in the third quarter. Iowa started the fourth quarter with a 24-yard field goal by Nichol to complete the game's scoring. Indiana got the ball for its last possession at its own 29 with 57 seconds to go.

Laufenberg completed S-of-7 passes for 69 yards in the last minute, but the final pass to McNabb was stopped 2 yards short of the goal line by Hawley. (UPI) The magic foot of Mike Johnston came to the rescue again Saturday, vaulting touchdown-starved Notre Dame to a last-minute 16-14 win over 16th-ranked Miami of Florida. Notre Dame, which has now gone two weeks with only a single touchdown, depended on Johnston's 32-yard field goal with 11 seconds left, his third field goal of the game, to overcome Mark Richt's two second-half touchdown passes. Boston College, 3-1-1, scored on tight end Steve Nizolek's 7-yard pass reception following a fake field goal attempt and Kevin Snow's field goals of 22 and 25 yards. Boston College scored first with 6:38 left in the first quarter on Snow's 22 yard field goal. WVU, 4-1, responded minutes into the second quarter on Woodside's 39-yard field goal. (UPI) Quarterback Prince McJunkins passed for 243 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 108 yards and another TD Saturday to spark Wichita State to a 48-14 victory over Illinois State in a Missouri Valley Conference game. McJunkins' 351 total yards offense and 243 yards passing were both personal bests and his 79-yard touchdown pass was another career best. McJunkins completed 14-of-21 passes with one interception.

Illinois State took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter when tailback Kevin Jones caught a 13-yard pass from John Coppens. The Shockers tied on their next possession when McJunkins scored on a 6-yard keeper. With two seconds left in the half, McJunkins connected on a 1-yard touchdown pass to Eric Denson. In the second half, an interception by Maurice Foxworth set up one of two third-quarter Shocker field goals by Sergio Lopez-Chavero. An ISU fumbled snap set up a Wichita touchdown when Dwight Eaton scored on a 5-yard run six plays later.

Maryland 38, Indiana St. 0 COLLEGE PARK, Md. (UPI) Boomer Esiason passed for 203 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score Saturday to carry Maryland to a 384 triumph over Indiana State. Willie Joyner and Rick Badanjefc. scored Maryland's other touchdowns and Jess Atkinson added 43-yard Are You Tied To Your Telephone? field goal as Terrapins, 3-2v'wqb their third straight! Maryland, which led 35-0 at intermission, scored five of the six times it had the ball in the first half as Esiason connected on 13-of-14 passes for the 203 yards in the first 30 minutes.
