PAGE SIXTEEN THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1962 Grand Haven Ski Bowl Will Open Dec. 22 GRAND HAVEN -This community's new winter sports area, which proved a success last winter, will be open at 10 a.m. Dec. 22, City Recreation Director Hector Christiansen reported Monday afternoon. The Grand Haven Ski Bowl has been listed with the other winter sports areas in west Michigan and if there is enough snow it will open operations at 10 a.m.

on Dec. 22. If weather conditions continue as Jhey are today skiing will be ideal, the director said. The city officials have set the first weekend of the school vacation period at Christmas time for the opening of the dune area Christmas vacation this year starts on Friday, Dec. 21.

The bowl will be in operation from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturdays, noon until 6 p.m. on Sundays, closed Mondays and Tues day, and open Wednesdays from 1 to 9:30 p.m.. Thursday from to 9:30 p.m.

and Fridays from 4 to 9:30 p.m. Dee Van Oordt of Grand Haven will be ski instructor this year and a ski patrol has been formed. Van Oordt has announced that jacket patches, complete with the Ski Bowl insignia, have arrived and will be available at the -ski lodge Dec. 22. Many improvements have been completed at the Ski Bowl.

The starting point has been raised and the beginners' run will be longer this year. The shelter run hill has been widened and the contour changed. An access path has been made from the top of the shelter run hill to the main bowl on the return hill. The main bowl run has been widened at the bases and sides and an additional tow will be set up. This would make five tows in all when the additional one goes into operation.

Devil's Run, the s-curve hill, has been widened and re-contoured. An additional run has been constructed off the Devil's Run and the safety gate distance has been increased on top of all rope tows to improve safety conditions. Eastern Michigan Wins Over Central Michigan YPS1LANTI (UPI) Easter Michigan University's basketba team romped to its third straigh triumph, 72-58, over Central Mich igan Tuesday night. Russ Harvey led the Huron with 22 points, while Dave Ne son's 15 tallies were high fo Central. Eastern led at the hall 37-32.

The verdict left EMU with 3-1 mark, their only loss an open ing 74-58 defeat to Alma. Centra is now 1-4. Saugatuck Loses Game BLOOMINGDALE Saugatuck High's basketballl team fell two points short here Tuesday night and lost to Bloomingdale, 65-63 after staging a quarter comeback and outscoring the Dales, 18-7 in the final frame. The Indians were down 58-45 entering the fourth quarter but took command in the final period. The Dales hung on in the closing seconds to save the Al-Van League victory.

Saugatuck has a 1-3 record with all of the setbacks received in league play. Bloomingdale led- 19-15 at the quarter and 40-31 at half. Tom Rock led the winners with 23 while Dennis Nicol, Jim Gardner and Bud Naughtin each had 12 for Saugatuck. Saugatuck defeated Bloomingdale, 60-47 in the reserve game. Marvin Line had 15 for the winners and Dave Kelley had 12 and Vance Van Wieren added 10.

Jay Kreuger had 16 for the Dales. The Indians host Lawton Friday night hi an Al-Van League game. This game was scheduled last Friday but was postponed because of the heavy snow. Wings Beat Flags PETROLIA, Ont (UPD The Detroit Red Wings took a breather from their National Hockey League chores last night and defeated the Port Huron Flags of the International Hockey League, 7-3, in an exhibition game. Packers Lead In Statistics NEW YORK (UPD--The Green I Bay Packers wound up the sea son as statistical champions ol the National Football League and set a new record for first downs that attested to their reputation as masters of ball-control.

Green Bay finished first in 15 categories of team statistics, ac cording to statistics released today by NFL headquarters. The Giants, who meet the Packers in the title playoff, Dec. 30, led in three categories, all on offense During the course of the 14- game schedule, the Packers amassed an all-time high total ol 281 first downs. This is clear-cut evidence of how well their methodical, ground-hugging offense controlled the ball en route to a 13-1 record. That total was three higher than the old mark set by the Los Angeles Rams during a 12-game 1950 schedule.

Here are the 10 other offensive categories in which the Packers were tops: first downs rushing H45I. net yards rushing 2,460 average yards per rush 4.7, pass completion percentage (60.1), total touchdowns (53), TD's running '39), extra points (52) and total points scored (415), fewest passes intercepted '13' and least yards on interception returns against them 122'. On defense, the Packers led in these four phases of football: fewest points allowed H48, the fewest first downs by passinj 9 4 i the least net passing yard age allowed 1.746) and most intercepted passes (3D. The Giants, defensive champions of 1961, did not lead in a single defensive category this season. They were tops, however, in overall net yardage gained touchdown passes 35i and least yardage lost attempting to pass '139).

The team passing championship went to the Philadelphia Eagles with 3,385 yards; while the De- Toit Lions won the overall de- "ense crown with a total yield of 3,217 yards, as well as the rushing defense title with a yield of 1,231 yards. The Chicago Bears had the top pass defense percentage M6.3); he St. Louis Cardinals lost the most fumbles (21); the Bears were the most penalized team 776 yards) and the Pittsburgh Steelers the least penalizd (427) and the San Francisco Forty Niners won the punting chanv pionship with an average of 465.6 yards for 48 kicks. Lions' Win Was Top Story DETROIT (UPI i-- The Detroit Lions' lop-sided beating of the champion Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day was chosen today as the top Michigan sports story of 1962. The 26-14 win that a Green Bay's 12-game winning streak was the almost-unanimous i of newspaper sports editors and radio and television sports directors.

The polling was conducted by United Press International to determine Michigan's 10 biggest sports stories of the year. Ranking second was the Tigers' disappointing drop from second to fourth place in the American League. The Lions' trade with the Cleveland Browns which resulted in the shuffling of quarterbacks i Plum and Jim Ninowski and acquisition of speedy halfback Tommy Watkins was selected as the third top story. Jack Adams' clouded resigna tion as front-office chief of the Detroit Red Wings and the Wings failure to make the Stanley Cup playoffs last season was voted the fourth best story of 1962. Fifth vote-getter was the flop Michigan State's highly-regardec football team--a pre-season choice for national, Big Ten and Rose Bowl honors.

The Spartans finished out of the money on all three counts. The remaining top i as the editors see them: 6. Tiger trades bring Gus Triandos, Bubba Phillips and Whitey Herzog into Motor City fold. 7. The Detroit Pistons peddle all star guard Gene Shue.

8. Detroit nominated as the U.S. Olympic bidder for 1968. 9. Detroit Red Wings get off to fast 1962-63 start after miserable wevious campaign.

Michigan Tech's hockey team wins NCAA crown for 1961-62. Alma Tops Albion For Fourth Win ALMA which last season won only three games, is off to its fastest basketball start in quite a while. The Scots, led by Bud Acton's 25 points, won their fourth game in five outings, downing Albion. 74-54, Tuesday night. Alma took a 29-23 lead at halftime en route to its second straight MIAA triumph.

Emil DeGrazia, with 15 tallies, was high man for the Britons, who dropped their sixth game in as many starts. Pro Bowlers Will Roll Here Tonight Exhibition bowling is slated tonight at 6 and 9 p.m. in the North- and Lanes and the Holland Bowing Lanes with the Falstaff Brew- ng team of St. Louis. rneet- ng two Holland all-star steams.

Calvin Drops Decision To Whirworth, 67-61 GRAND RAPIDS Calvin Col lege's basketball team dropped a 67-61 decision to Whitworth College of Spokane, in the Grand Rapids Christian gym here Tues day night. Hope Arrives On West Coast Hope College's basketball team arrived in Los Angeles, early today and will play in the second annual Valley Collegiate Invitational Basketball Tournament Thursday and Friday in Cerritos College gym in Norwalk, Calif. The Flying Dutchmen plan to sightsee today, hold a practice session and tonight will witness the Los Angeles Lakers in a National Basketball Association game. The 14-member contingent left Holland 7:45 p.m. Tuesday by automobile for Chicago and left O'Hare Field at 12:25 a.m. today by jet.

The team will return to Chicago Saturday at 6 p.m. Competing in the four-team tournament will be Occidental. Redlands and Westmont. The tourney is sponsored by the Valley Christian High School Boosters Club of Bellflower. Calif.

Coach Ross De Vette heads the Hope group that includes assistant coach Daryl Siedentop. trainer Lawrence Green and dean of students Dr. James Harvey. Team members are Co-captains James Vander Hill and Gary Nederveld, Glenn and Clare Van Wieren, Ron Venhuizen, Ron Te Beest, Art Kramer, Curt Haaksma. Dean Overman and Chuck Veurink.

Grand Haven Has 3-1 Mark GRAND HAVEN Boasting a 3-1 record including a win over ZeelanH Tuesday night, Grand Haven's basketball team plays Holland Friday night at 8 p.m. in the Holland fieldhouse. The game, besides being a traditional contest, is for a slice of second place in the LMAC. Both teams have 1-1 league marks with the Bucs beating Muskegon Heights and losing to Benton Harbor while Holland topped Traverse City and lost to Muskegon. Grand Haven also stopped Muskegon Catholic.

Coached by Don Constant, Grand Haven will have 6'6" Rog Weavers at center. Weavers scored 16 in Grand Haven's 50-43 win over Muskegon Heights, the first time the Bucs had defeated the Tigers since 1952. Larry Prelesnik, Grand Haven's workhorse in football and basketball, will play one guard flanked by Dave Wheeler. The forwards will be Greg Cook and Bill Grimes. Only two overtimes have been played in LMAC history and the Holland-Grand Haven gime in Grand Haven last Dec.

22 was the first one. The Bucs won 72-71 after the game was tied 65-65 at the end of regulation play. Muskegon Heights' 68-66 win over Muskegon Dec. 6 this season was the second LMAC overtime game. Zephyrs Defeat Pistons; San Francisco Triumphs CHICAGO HJPI) The Detroit Pistons lost to the Chicago Zephyrs, 113-110 here Tuesday night in National Basketball Association action.

John Cox had 29 for the winners and Don Ohl hit 25 for the Pistons. San Francisco topped St. Louis. 130-110 and New York nipped Cincinnati, 103-102 in other games. Calvin College Has Own Ski Runs GRAND RAPIDS 'UPD-Calvin i College will soon become only the third institution of higher learning to operate its own ski slopes actually on school grounds.

Only Michigan Tech at and Dartmouth College in New Hampshire own and operate on- campus ski slopes at the present. The college said four members of its ski club conceived the idea or the slope on the northern edge of Calvin's Knollcrest campus. The slopes two main runs will je 400 feet long, drop 50 feet verbally. Future plans call for the crea- ion of a tobbogan run. skating ink with lighting for night use and a heated lodge.
