Cole still is amazed at his audacity in switching from shoe selling to roentgenology. "I a raise in the store," he "and that was what made me quit. I decided if I could be a success as a shoe salesman I could be a success at anything." Father Is Teacher. Until he got Into Mcdical School at Columbia University, Dr. Cole had had only one teacher his father.

He had not gone to grade school or to high school. Everything he knew, he had learned from his schoolteacher father. "The day I quit rny job I went up to Columbia and got a catalogue to find out what I needed to know to become a doctor," he recalled. "For three months I studied Latin and a lot of other things, then went for my entrance exam. "I flunked every subject every single one the first time.

His findings were brought to the attention of the mayor of New York, and the mayor, with the backing of Herman Briggs, health officer, contended the X-ray should be used in examination of all United States soldiers. But the suggestion was "overruled," Dr. Cole said, and the twenty-three men, plus a lot of others all over the United States, served in the armed forces despite tubercular tendencies. That expense is estimated at between $500 and $600 a month. It also came to light recently that a move is under way to move or give up the headquarters and let party affairs drift more or less until new leadership is found which could submerge the bitterness grown up in the patty in recent years. But the committee at a recent meeting did nothing more than talk of removing the headquarters.

It did indorse a made by Mr. Miller to enlist the aid of a committee in reorganizing the party. There has been some talk since the November election that Mr. Miller intends to resign, but Mr. Miller did not confirm that.

After flying patrol over India, night bomber squadron work in Leap Saves Bomber Pilot As Sbip Falls Special to Tha Courier-Journal. Stanford, Dee. 1. An army 1 n-m otore A-20-A bomber, piloted by Lieut. Robert Edwards, 27, of Macon, crashed and burned about five miles from here this afternoon as the pilot escaped in a parachute leap.

The plane was heard flying over here at about 3:45 p.m., when suddenly the motors seemed to go dead. Soon afterward, flames were seen on the Henry Anderson farm. Neighbors, going to the scene, found the plane apparently a total wreck after it had landed nose first. Jumped Just Once Before. The pilot, who said he was testing the plane, was on the way to Patterson Field, Dayton, Ohio, from Macon.

He said he "experienced difficulties and bailed out at 3,000 feet," landing approximately half a mile from where the plane crashed. "I'm sorry the accident happened, but I'm glad to be alive," Edwards added, explaining he had made only one practice jump before today's leap for life. He said he had been in active service a year. Nearby residents said they understood a portion of the flier's parachute was burned. This, however, could not be confirmed, Edwards refusing to talk after making his first general statement.

Residents did not know whether the plane had caught on fire in the air. State policemen were called to guard the plane's wreckage. At the Civil Aeronautics Authority office at Bowman Field at Louisville, it was said Edwards called that office from Crab Orchard, and reported the crash.
