THE TERRE HAUTE STAR, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1965 13 Wiley Trims Tech and Posts Perfect Season Ewing, Dusenberry Score 3 TDs Apiece For 41-25 Victory By JERRY WILSON Star Sports Writer The Wiley Red Streaks romped to their tenth straight victory of the year over a stubborn Gerstmeyer ball club and finished with a perfect season, caging the Black Cats, 41 to 25, in a hard-fought football Veterans' Day game Thursday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Washington Lee university has something you don't fact it would like some more. In some respects, is just like Yale.

There was a time, several weeks ago, when eight girls re cruited from Connecticut College for Women took the field to lead cheers for dear old Yale. But their appearance at the Yale-Columbia game was their first and last as the Yale undergraduates were told the cheerleading chore was theirs alone.

Members of the Varsity Club decided three years ago their athletic prowess might be im- back, led the Red Streak scoring attack, each scoring three of the six Wiley touchdowns. Ewing also gained 187 yards in 19 plays, an average of about 10 yards a carry. Tech's strong-armed quarterback, Bob Rowe, tossed the ball 18 times, completing 12 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Rowe also carried the ball himself for one TD and a total of 29 yards in eight carries.

So they turned to Southern Seminary, a junior college for girls six miles away at Buena Vista. Southern Sem conducted tryouts, and five girls and two alternates were selected to cheer the Generals on. The girls furnish their own white sweaters and blue skirts and have to find their own rides to Lexington.

But they've been here, three at a time, cheering and leaping at each of home games. "We just love it," says Ginny Caldwell, a senior from Richmond, and head cheerleader. "The girls practice every day before the start of school and usually managed at least one practice a week during the season. We've even considered cheering for the home basketball games if they'll let us." The Generals, with a 5-2 record, will have extra bit of incentive this Saturday for the season finale against Southwestern of Memphis, girl cheerleaders. under the 15-year coaching reign of Dick Martin.

The victory added icing to the Streaks' Western Indiana Conference title captured last week, while almost assuring the Streaks of the Wabash Valley championship which will be de cided later on a point basis. Wiley erupted for the first time in the Veterans' Day affair when Dusenberry followed a drive from the Tech 31-yard line by going through the middle for a touchdown from the four- yard stripe. The Red Streaks had obtained possession when Tech's quarterback fumbled on his own 31. Creed Hubbard kicked the first of his five conversions. Jim Ewing scored his first TD of the contest about three and a half minutes later when de twisted his way into the end zone from the ten yard-line.

Hubbard's kick was good, making the score 14-0. Farris Ellinger put Gerstmeyer on the Scoreboard late in the first period. Taking the kickoff on his own three, he ran to the 12. Then in the next play he broke away and went 50 yards to the Wiley 38. The contest will close out the local football campaign which has not brought much happiness to the Golden Bears or the Eagles of Garfield.

The game gave Honey a team that had won only one game in three years of previous play, a 6-2-1 season record. The Bees' only two losses were to Wiley (26-0) and Gerstmeyer (26-14). Honey Creek also ran up a tie wcith Linton (14-14). West Vigo finished the 1965 season with a 6-4 mark under the coaching of newcomer Bob Clements.
