GoJ3 I I THE PIZZA PEOPLE By CAROL LAWSON N.Y. Times Writer NEW YORK For the first time in Elizabeth Taylor's career, there will be no one on the set to shout "cut! There will be no way to stop the action and start over again if something goes wrong a security blanket always present at the shooting of her more than 50 films. Instead, Miss Taylor is going to be left entirely to her own devices the night of May 7, when she makes bar Broadway debut as Regina Giddens, the greedy, heartless heroine of Lillian Hellman's melodrama "The Little Foxes." "I've asked Maureen Stapleton and all the other actors in the play, one by one, 'What happens if you forget your lines?" Miss Taylor said after a busy day of rehearsal that left time for only a chicken leg for lunch. She was lounging on a sofa in her hotel suite in a setting right out of a film: a lavender sky, visible through the picture window, matching the lavender of her velour pullover and famous eyes. "No matter how well you know your lines, you could still go blank.

That is a frightening thought to me." BUT IF ANYTHING else is worrying Miss Taylor, she refuses to admit it. She is well aware, of course, of the curiosity and speculation surrounding her Broadway debut. For, by her own admission, she is better known these days as an international celebrity than as an actress. Many people in the theater community have been incredulous since hearing the news. Why, they are asking, does she choose to face the tough audiences, not to mention critics, on Broadway? Why take the gamble, and why now, Just before her 49th birthday? "I've been gambling all my life," Miss Taylor replied, refusing to elaborate.

She did say that over the years she had often been approached by Broadway producers with offers to star in any play of her choice, but it wasn't until she met Zev Bufman, a producer of "Brigadoon" and other musical revivals, that she said yes. "The timing was perfect," Miss Taylor remarked. "John is so busy with the new administration." John is Sen. John Warner, her sixth husband, to whom she was married in 1976. AFTER DECIDING several months ago to work with Bufman, Miss Taylor finally settled on Miss Hellman's play about a Southern family desperate for fortune and power at the turn of the century.

Tallulah Bankhead starred as Regina in the original Broadway production in 1939, and Anne Bancroft played the role in the 1967 revival at Lincoln Center. "It's a wonderful play and a great part," Miss Taylor said. "If I'm going to do a play for the first time, I want to do something that is not a walk-on mentally. Regina is such a many-faceted role. She is a coquette.

A flirt. She is filled with ambition and a terrifying sense of greed. She is frightened, she is frustrated and she is vulnerable." sitting assignment for Laverne and Scotland Yard cannot prove its case Shirley escalates into a wild party, against him gdv5 IBCBCDFIamiDgo Road: "The Face The Music Election" With family, well-wishers 8:00 and the press gathered at the Q) Three's Company: (CLOSED Wheldon mansion on election night CAPTIONED) When a wealthy man for her husband, Fielding's victory becomes obsessed with making a re- celebration, Constance Carlyle sur-luctant Cindy his bride Jack and prises him in a passionate embrace BSC arts scholarships open are almost Regina vulnerable? "I gather she hasn't always been played that way," Miss Taylor replied, "but she isn't a total ice maiden a tough lady all the way through." The actress added that she had never seen the play or the film version, which starred Bette Davis. "I don't want to see it," she remarked. "I don't want to be intimidated by previous performances." MISS TAYLOR volunteered that she was concerned about her voice, which lacks the training needed to project to the last row of the balcony.

"I'm working on it," she said. "I asked the other actors if I'll need any special coaching. They didn't think so." she use a microphone, a ubiquitous and much-criticized prop on Broadway these days? "Oh, no," Miss Taylor replied, looking aghast. An old hand at interviews, she is gracious and displays a quick sense of humor often at her own expense but is adept at saying exactly what she wants to When a visitor commented on her remarkable weight loss in recent months, for example, she retorted, "Does it matter what. Maureen Stapleton weighs? What does it matter what I weigh?" The cast of "The Little Foxes" is rehearsing at the Golden Theater, where Miss Taylor's limousine waits all day.

She is "taking this very seriously and working very hard," oy her own account. Friday, though, Miss Taylor cut short the rehearsal so she could go to Washington to attend a birthday party at the White House for her friend, President Reagan. "Nancy is coming to see the play," she said. Miss Taylor and the first lady have known each other since their days as contract actresses at M-G-M, when Mrs. Reagan was known as Nancy Davis.
