"I get a lot of Joy out of acting it doesn't have to be a social issue to make me happy." said Asner, calling to promote The Bronx Zoo, a much-moved NBC series that settles today into a new time slot, 10 p.m. Wednesdays, on WTHR (Channel 13). The gruff, paunchy actor plays get-tough Inner-city school principal Joe Danzig who, coin-cidentally, burst onto the public scene about the same time as real-life New Jersey disciplinarian Joe Clark. After several false starts In the Intervening years most notably a garment district comedy with Eileen Brennan.

Off the Rack, yanked quickly off the air Asner is "steadily engaged and back on the air." He'll also play a grandfather In a new Disney movie, A Death In Vienna. (The film concerns the friendship of two girls one Jewish, one not at the time the Nazis march into Austria.) Despite the fallow years, Asner hasn't toned down his politics. The gruff teddy bear who once reassured Mary Richards showed a wicked set of teeth, attacking "the bloodbath in El Salvador we're propping up with our millions" and other Injustices during the interview. He's glad the Reagan years are ending, although he reluctantly admitted the country probably needed them. "The liberals had spent enough money and made enough mistakes without coming up with solutions," Asner said.

"Inflation was bothering most Americans, and the quality of life was not improving. People felt sore after Vietnam. "They wanted their good old American pride back, and Reagan puffed up their chests. Unfortunately, he did It with a house of mirrors." if All times are Eastern Standard. (B) denotes shows shown in black and white.

1 iU LllUl VUIUll.V,llUH iuu iai said Asner emphatically. "I'm not a backer of Joe Clark. I think some of the things he does are abusive to kids. Certainly Joe Danzig makes mistakes and admits to being wrong." Danzig Is a get-tough maverick. In last week's episode, to improve attendance, he stopped welfare payments to parents of truants, causing an uproar.

And more issue shows drugs, illiteracy and creationtsm vs. evolution are on the way. But The Bronx Zoo only mirrors real-life as seen through the distorted lens ot television. For example: Although only three blacks are featured in supporting roles on the show, beleaguered Benjamin Harrison High in real life would be "overwhelmingly black," Asner admitted. "Our casting and our or code does pander to the maiority." Asner didn't try to meet any inner-city principals before taking on the role.

"I discovered when I did Lou Grant, after becoming established on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, that there was no way I could sit around The Los Angeles Times and observe editors doing their jobs," he said. "I was just too much of a distraction." After CBS' cancellation of Lou Grant in 1982, Asner fell into a period of unemployment unusual for a seven-time Emmy winner. He felt he was being ostracized for his highly vocal union-Ism as a two-term president of the Screen Actors Guild and his left-wing politics like calling for medical supplies for antlgov-ernment insurgents in El Salvador when President Reagan was praising the ruling Junta. Today the Kansas City native shies away from the word "blacklist." "I don't think there ever was one in a formalized way," he said.
