WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1959 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR PAGE 23 Pete Elliott Named Illinois Football Coach Becomes Big 10 Rival Of Brother At Michigan Oscar Pumps 42 In 86-71 Win I Cincinnati (AP) The University of Cincinnati's No. 1 rated Bearcats shook loose from Bradley's Braves in the last half here tonight and registered an 86-71 basketball victory with Oscar Robertson getting 42 points. Bradley was rated No. 5 in the nation in the Associated Press poll. It was Cincinnati's sixth straight victory without a defeat and Bradley's first setback in seven contests.

Bradley trailed by only 38-35 at the half after almost wiping out what once had been a nine-point Cin cinnati lead. Early in the second half, the Braves trimmed their deficit to a point at 44-43 and then Cincinnati reeled off nine straight points and never was threatened again. Robertson scored 24 of his points in that last half and he and Bob Wiesenhahn completely dominated the defensive backboard. Robertson also had 13 rebounds and 8 assists in the last half. (AP) The first brother head coaching act in Big Ten football history was formed yesterday when Pete Elliott, University of California coach, was appointed new coach at Illinois. Elliott, 33, accepted the post vacated by retirement of Ray Eliot and becomes a conference coaching rival of his brother, Chalmers (Bump) Elliott, 34, who made his debut as Michigan's top coach last season. THE ELLIOTTS were back-field mates on Michigan's undefeated 1947 Big Ten and Rose Bowl champion team and now will match strategy in the tradition steeped Illinois vs Michigan rivalry. Pete Elliott, who had 10-21 record in three seasons as California's coach, is only the third Illinois coach in 47 years. Illinois and the Big Ten are my home and background, and I have always had great admiration for both." Pete said leaving California was "the toughest decision I ever had to make." Negotiations were completed yesterday morning for Cohn's group to buy Bill Rosensohn's 3314 interest in the corporation that held the contract. No sum was mentioned but Rosensohn, happily confirming the sale, said he had received a "substantial payment." THE NEW GROUP previously had bought the 66 interest held by Vincent Velella, also a New York lawyer, in Feature Sports, formerly known as Rosensohn Enterprises, Inc. The promoter's license of Rosensohn Enterprises was revoked by the commission Nov.

Humbert (Jack) Fugazy, 72-year-old promoter of the 1920s who will head the promotion, said he planned to leave Sunday night for Sweden to meet with Johansson, the world heavyweight boxing champion, and Edwin Ahlquist, his adviser. He will be accompanied by Cohn, former lightheavy champ Tommy Loughran and Bill Fugazy, Jack's nephew. The Commission listened for about 90 minutes to Cohn's plans. The former counsel for the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy's investigating subcommittee listed his nine associates.

He also told the Commission his group planned to apply for a license immediately. Fugazy has set an early June target date for the fight. He said it might be held at the Polo Grounds, Yankee Stadium, Yonkers Raceway or Aqueduct Racetrack. It was a radical innovation for Pennsylvania, previously opposed to legalized gambling in any form. With Boston leading 48-47, the Celtics erupted. K. C. Jones with eight points and Tom Heinsohn with six led the explosion which shot the Celtics ahead, 68-58, by intermission.

IN THE THIRD quarter, the Celts continued their bombardment and upped their lead, 97-77. In the fourth quarter, it was just a matter of running out the clock. Bill Sharman led Boston with 26 points and Heinsohn had 25. Bailey Howell led Detroit with 25 points. In the opener, with four minutes left, Tyra broke a 109-109 deadlock with two baskets while George added six points to cement the victory as the Knicks made it two in a row within 72 hours over the Royals.

In the opener, Charlie Tyra and Jack George triggered a Jate spurt which carried the New York Knickerbockers to a 127-119 victory over the Cincinnati Royals. LAST NIGHT'S triumph pulled the Celtics to within five of the NBA's all-time record for consecutive wins a mark set by the defunct Washington Capitols in 1946-47. Defeating the Pistons, the Celtics also won their 10th in a row over a Western Division club and opened their grip on first place in the Eastern Division over idle Philadelphia. Overall, the Celtics have won 26 while losing only four this season.
