THETAOiN6WS Oct. 24, 1973 Elizabethtown daughters visit old haunts By DAN ROSS Elizabethtown, N.M., may be a ghost town now but some of its former residents are still very much alive. In particular are the daughters of the "Elizabeth" in the town's name, still spry and active. Mrs. John Haddon.

78, and Mrs. Charles Gallagher, 87, the daughters of Elizabeth and Joseph Henry Lowrey, were caught by chance by a Taos News reporter on a picnic visit to some of their old haunts in the high country during aspen season. Both are still living in Eagle Nest, as is Mrs. Haddon's husband. John, who said hs was taking them to a dance thai night.

"Oh, we can still whirl," replied his svife. With them on their picnic were Kit Carson's great-great- grandniece, Mrs. Tal Neal, her daughter Kimberley Neal, Kansher and Hazel' Cooke Upshaw of Amarillo, Texas, the authors of several historical treatises on New Mexico and Elizabethtown, Mrs. Marie Harter of Eagle Nest and Mrs. Becky Grimes of Willow Creek.

The spot they were caught visiting was the former site of a cabin used while constructing a ditch that flumed water down to Elizabethtown from the East Fork of the Red River for the miners to wash their raw ore. Earlier they had been to the nearby ranch of Mrs. Neal's late father-in-law, T.P. Neal, on the other side of Bull-o'-the- Woods Mountain from Taos Ski Valley. "My brother Willie Lowrey used to own Bull-o'-the-Woods." PICNIC PORTRAIT Shown here on a picnic visit to the mountains during aspen season are (left to right) Mrs.

Gallagher added. Mrs. Gallagher induced to reminisce about the "old days." "Elizabethtown used to be a flourishing town, the county seat, but now it's nothing but a bunch of ruins." she said. "We lived in that old house on the east side of the road right up until 1916," she recalled, "but it was two stories then, and it's only one story high now. She was also reminded by Mrs.

Upshaw about a cloth sack belt with pockets her mother made for her to carry the gold dust to the bank when she went to school in Trinidad, Colo. Then her brother-in-law John Haddon started reminiscing, too, and pointed to a pond across the trail that he once stocked with fish he'd carried up on horseback. Elizabethtown got its name when Capt. John Moore of Ft. Union brought his infant daughter, Elizabeth, with him when he went gold-hunting right after gold was discovered there in 1867.

It just means taxes," he said, there's no end to taxes in a conservancy district." He cited the case of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District established in 1927, in which he said 8,500 small farmers lost their properties to taxes within eight years.
