3rd St. Clearfield An AP State Locusts May Have Gotten Travel Bug (Editor's Note: The 17-year-old locust put in a surprise appearance this year in Westmoreland County. Damage reportedly was not extensive, but scientists say that it could indicate an expanding population of the Brood species which is due in Western Pennsylvania again in 1982). By H.L. SCHWARTZ III PITTSBURGH (AP) The travel bug may have bitten the 17-year cicada, a clannish, stay- at-home locust that scientists can usually set watches and compasses by.

Swarms of the Brood species appeared on schedule this year in Greene, Fayette and Washington counties but also showed up in Westmoreland County, marking the easternmost expansion of the insect since 1897. Dr. George Wallace, curator of insects and spiders at Carnegie Institute Museum, said he received three reports of the presence of the locusts in Westmoreland County before making a personal field trip. He found heavy swarms near Ruffsdale arKl Jones Mills in the Southern part of the county and a sparser, more curious population at Powdermill. Wallace said the Brood cicada, one of eight broods known to appear In Pennsylvania, is a dense, compact type that seems to believe insects that sing together stay together.

"They're very clannish. They sing together in a strong chorus and don't snread very much," Wallace said. "At Powdermill the swarming appeared to be quite sparse. No individual cicadas were seen, either resting or flying. There was no merging chorus of singing," he added.

The 17-year or periodical locust, deadly enemy of the orchard owner, is so-called because there are 17 species or broods one which appears each year on May 7 or 8. They usually are goine by mid-July. Each brood appears only once every 17 years. Damage is caused by female locusts as they gouge- slits into twigs to deposit their eggs. A series of two-or three inch wounds weakens the twig till it VISIT MARLENE'S DRESS SHOP FOR BETTER BUYS 130 Market St Clearfield General Contract Work SEE ARTHUR CECIL RISHEL Telephone 765-4262 CLEARFIELD MAYTAG SALES and SERVICE PHILIPSBURG.

"The cicada is not a destructive insect unless it gets into orchards. Oaks and other forest trees can usu-dly withstand it," Wallace said. He -added that there does not appear to be much damage this year. Swarms of the Brood cicada also appeared as scheduled in Eastern Ohio and most of West Virginia. The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources said Wirtf Jackson, Mason and Wood counties reported the insect in abundance.

Wallace said there were two possible explanations for the appearance in Westmoreland County. One is that the locust population in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania was bigger than usual and expanded into another area. The other explanation, Wallace said, is that the Brood locust actually has appeared in Westmoreland County since 1897 but has not been identified. (AP) Gov. Hughes, hopeful that President Johnson will declare New Jersey a drought disaster area, is expected to seek support from governors of neighboring states. A presidential declaration of a disaster area would permit massive federal aid for the stricken area, Hughes said Saturday after a two-hour helicopter tour of North Jersey reservoirs.

Hughes, in Minneapolis, for the National Governors Conference, said he would confer with the governors of New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware on the issue. The governor said he had recommended that New Jersey be declared a disaster area 10 days ago during a meeting in Washington with President Johnson's newly created Waters Resources Council.
