PAGE TEN THE PROGRESS, Clearfield, Curwensville, Philipsburg, Moshonnon Volley, Monday, July 26, 1963 Clearfield Little Leaguers Victorious Philipsburg Teeners, Little Leaguers Lose Little League PHILIPSBURG The Philipsburg Little League All- Stars hopes for a shot at the 1965 District title were shattered Saturday evening as the home town all-stars bowed to Moshannon Valley's all-stars 5-1, in the first round of the sudden death play-off series. The Philipsburg nine got on the Scoreboard in the first inning when Ron Heeman hit the second pitch over the right-center field fence for a home run to put the charges Of Peters-Humm out in front 1-0. That was all Philipsburg could come up with off winning pitcher Denny Martin as he limited them to only three more hits over the last five innings while out nine. Losing pitcher Mark Williams surrendejed nine base hits with Moshannon Valley coming up with a hit in every frame. Philipsburg led 1-0 until the third inning when with two-outs Randy reached first on a fielder's choice, Ken Vroman followed with a single and Denny Martin ripped a home run to deep center to put the Mo-Valley team out in front 3-1.

Mo-Valley picked up their last two runs in the fifth on another home run but this time with Ken Vroman hitting one to left-center with teammate Randy Tubo again safe on a fielder's choice to make the final score stand at 5-1 in favor of Moshannon Valley's'All-Stars. Mo-Valley's All-Stars will now face Clearfield's All-Stars on Tuesday, July 24, in quest of the district 10 title. Casey Stengel Fractures Hip; Awaits Surgery By BOB GREEN Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) Casey Stengel, perhaps the most colorful of all baseball's storied characters and a legend in his own time, lay in a hospital bed today, rigid in traction and wracked with pain, awaiting surgery on a fractured left hip. "At his age, any such surgery has to be considered serious," Dr. Peter La Motte said of the fabled 01' Perfesser, field boss and guiding spirit of the New York Mets, one-time leader of the Yankees and for 55 years a baseball figure.

Dr. La Motte, Met team physician, said Stengel suffered a displaced fracture of the left hip when he fell stepping out of a car early Sunday, on the eve of his 75th birthday celebration scheduled between games of a Met doubleheader at Shea Stadium. The seriousness of the injury was not known until Stengel awoke Sunday in pain at the home of Met controller Joe DeGregorio. He was rushed by ambulance to Roosevelt Hospital, placed in traction and given sedatives to relieve the pain. JeenerLeague PHILIPSBURG The DuBois Teener League All Stars unloaded a 9-hit attack that featured three home runs to dethrone Philipsburg as the Area Six Champions here Saturday night, wrapping up the final best-of-three playoff series with a 5-4 victory. The win, sixth in seven tournament outings, qualifies the DuBois Teeners for the Pennsylvania State VFW Teener competition at Chester, August 2-7. Both teams scored three runs in the first inning of Saturday's "rubber" game in the best-of-three series and were still even at 4-4 after five innings despite the three home run smashes off the bats of DuBois All-Stars Mike John Buskirk and John Rio. Lepionka drilled his with Denny Shobert aboard in the first, and Buskirk backed that with his second home run of the series.

Rio's bases-empty belt came in the third inning to break a 3-3 tie and give DuBois a temporary 4-3 edge. Philipsburg sent eight men to the plate and chased three of them around the bases to erase DuBois' early 3-0 lead that the Lepionka and Buskirk homers provided. Four DuBois errors and four hits did the damage in Philipsburg's three-run first. Harry Townsend, Bill Socie, Dan Danko and Merle Ammerman rapped the singles to provide the stick work. After Rio's circuit clout snapped the 3-3 deadlock in the third, Philipsburg came right back to square the count again in the fourth when Frank Petulla walked, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and rode home on Socie's second hit of the night.

DuBois pushed home the deciding tally in the sixth on a bunt single, a sacrifice and two very costly Philipsburg errors, and made that advantage stand up with the help of left fielder Shobert's fine defensive play that took a home run away from Philipsburg's Townsend in the sixth. Mike Coront got the bunt hit that set that deciding run aboard, and two throwing errors on futile pickoff tries enabled him to come on around. 5 AB RBI Shobert, If 4 1 1 Gregori, ss 3 Lepionka, cf 3 1 1 1 3 0 2 0 0 9 Buskirk, 2b, 4 Rio, rf 3 Shaw, 3b, 2b 4 Coront, Ib 3 Matusky, 0 Miknis, 3b 3 Totals 27 FHILIPSBURG-4 AB RBI Townsend, cf 4 1 1 0 Abbott, Ib, 4 Socie, ss 3 Yoder, 3b 4 Danko, cf, 3 Hoffer, If Ib 3 Ammerman, 3b, rf 3 Coval, 0 Quick, If 2 PSP Pistol Team Cops Awards At Regional Journey A team representing the Penn- 0 sylvania State Police won 16 in- 0 dividual awards and three team 0 awards at the Middle Atlantic Regional Pistol Tournament held Petulla, 2b A Milsom, If 1 Totals 29 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 4 DuBois Philipsburg 0 Troop Punxsutawney. Penfield Downs Indians On Nyquist 1-Hitter PENFIELD Kurt Nyquist yielded the Clearfield Indians only one hit, a single by Ed Bradford, as the Penfield Firemen downed the Indians 2-0 in a JC League game here yesterday afternoon. The Firemen managed but two runs off Clearfield hurler, Fred Covey, one in the first inning which was unearned and another in the fifth on two hits. The Indians were unable even to post a scoring threat against Nyquist, who fanned eight and 1 three, allowing only Bradford's single in the fourth inning, a line shot to right field. Penfield scored in the first when Bill Fulton walked, stole second and went to third when the catchers' throw was wild. Centerfielder Kolbe retrieved the ball, but he overthrew third, permitting Fulton to trot home with the first run.

In the Penfield fifth inning, Vince Parziale singled, Don Heiberger walked and then Fulton cracked a single to score Parziale. John Shannon of Altoona took the lead in the modified feature and even held it through a restart on the 12th lap, caused when Philipsburg's Dave Stephens and'West Decatur's Chuck Davis spun out. On the 16th lap, though, Shannon lost his hard- fought lead to Garvey who went, on to win. In the stock feature, Rex Parks of Spring Valley took the lead and held it until the third lap when he was overtaken by Jim Walker of Bigler.

Walker held the lead for only three laps as Frenchy Couturiaux took over the top position. The Philipsburg driver was in first place until the eighth lap when he was overtaken by Roos. It was not clear racing for Roos as he was pursued until the 16th lap by Philipsburg's Roy Pinto. On the 16th lap, though, Pinto spun out leaving Roos virtually by himself. Mo Valley Stars Lose in Sr. LL HOUTZDALE The Moshannon Valley Senior Little League All-Stars fell short in their bid to upend the Shippensburg All- Stars, 10-9, here' last Saturday night.

The Mo Valley contingent is now eliminated from further Senior Little League playoff action. The Senior Little League is composed of boys between the ages of 13-15. Mo Valley scored four runs in the first inning, three in the third and two runs in a seventh inning rally which wasn't enough to overcome the visitors. Shippensburg posted six tallies in the third frame while having two in the first and singletons in the second and sixth innings to account for their ten runs. Six of Mo Valley's runs came off home run bats of Darry Martin and Larry Kitko.

Martin cracked two, one in the first inning with two mates aboard and a solo blast in the third. Kitko's came with one in the third inning. Top Four-Leaf 2-1 for Second Playoff Victory LANSE The Clearfield Little Leaguers, powered by Bill Elridge's two-run homer, advanced to third-round action in the District 10 playoffs, by edging the Four-Leaf Clover Little League All-Stars, 2-1, here Saturday evening. Clearfield will now tangle with the Moshannon Valley Stars, who defeated Philipsburg 5-1 on Saturday.

The Clearfield- Mo Valley contest is scheduled for tomorrow at the Houtzdale ball diamond at 6 p. m. Elridge, who is turning into a regular hero. Ditched a 4-2 victory over Osceola Mills on Thursday and knocked Saturday's game-winning blow in the third inning. The losers' posted their only score in the second inning on three singles.

Clearfield tried to get to the Scoreboard in the first inning when Randy Young led off with a double off the rightfieltl fence. The outfielder hobbled the ball, as Young scooted to third. With no outs, Young raced to the plate on a passed ball but was tagged out by the pitcher, covering the plate. In the third inning, with Clearfield down 1-0, first baseman Dan Wheatcroft cracked a single to rightfield to start the inning. Elridge then drove Denny Jury's second pitch over the centerfield fence for the winners' two scores.

Four-Leaf's second inning produced its lone run on back- to-back singles by Vince Lucas and George Eisenhauer, a fielder's choice and Ernie Majeski's single that drove in Eisenhauer for the tally. The losers' threatened in the third and fifth innings, but costly mental errors cost them runs. Mike Humenik knocked a ball through the infield on an error, and when another error was made in the outfield, Humenick dashed to third. The alert Clearfield infield noticed that Humenick failed to touch second. Clearfield's Randy Dillman tagged second and the umpires called the runner out.

In the fifth Raymond tried to stretch a single into a double and was thrown out at second. The next hitter then cracked a meaningless double for he was left stranded.
