Headquarters at Lake Success Well Worth Time By EAHL MILLER So you're planning a. vacation trip to the New York City vicinity this spring or summer? Don't fail to Include in your itinerary a visit to Lake Success, interim headquarters of the United Nations, where the efforts are belflg made dally to resolve the differences of the world's great powers and where the wny is being paved for further progress toward a peaceful cure of our international ills. The United Nations is a powerful influence for conciliation and mediation, and a visit to -------Success will surely afford the Visitor a better insight into what the often-misunderstood U. N.

stands for and how it is endeavoring to attain its objectives. This piece is not designed to describe the functions of the Nations but rather to explain who may visit the United Nations and what they may ex-. pect to see, as well as to mention briefly such factors us visiting days, transportation, reservations, meals and the like. A section of the U. N. Secretariat gives special attention to nongovernmental organizations, arranges for briefings, speakers, on the day of the visit in addition to observing open meetings. As for student groups, entire classes from secondary schools (ninth grade and above) may observe U. N.

meetings. Educational programs are arranged for student groups on Tuesdays and Fridays, and briefings are provided during the balance of the week, A sufficient number of teacher cbapcrpnes must accompany the class. Classes from the lower grades may visit interim headquarters for briefings. Reservations Requests by mall from a person or group outside commuting distance of Interim headquarters are alwayc granted for tho most interesting meeting open to the public and held during the period designated for the visit. Tho only requirement Is that requests must be received sufficient time for confirmation by mail from tho Admissions Office.

There Is one excep- tion to this rule: opening day of a session of the General Assembly. Organizations and school groups should make reservations at least two weeks in advance. Telephone requests received the last business day before the intended visit are confirmed on a first-come, first- served basis up to the seating capacity of the council chamber or hall. Schedule Very seldom are U. N.

meetings scheduled more than 24 hours In advance. During sessions 6t the General Assembly (one each year), Economic and Social Council (two each year for a period of six weeks), and the Trusteeship Council (twq each year for a perlod'of nix weeks), meetings are usually held dally, both morning and afternoon. The Security Council, Atomic Energy Commission, Commission, on Conventional Armaments, and the Interim Committee of the General Assembly are In continuous session hold six to eight meetings monthly. Visiting Days, Hours Visiting days are from Monday through Saturday inclusive, during the General Assembly period (3rd Tuesday in September to approximately Dec. 10).

Visiting days during the balance of the year are from Monday through Fridays, inclusive. Visiting hours arc from 9:30 a. m. to 6 p. m.

Meetings convene at 10:30 a. m. 11 a. m. and 2:30 m.

3 p. m. Morning meetings adjourn at 1 p. m. and afternoon meetings.adjourn at 6 p.
