Mr Jonkman said the Indian ministry itself has been in Salt Lake City for 16 years and the Chnstian Reformed Church nationally has been involved with Indian ministries for 80 years He said the decision to establish an Indian ministry in Salt Lake City was made because of the large numbers of Indians living the city for educational purposes and job oypuit unities We've met with vary mg success during the past 16 years, although weve ministered to a transient population as the Indians move back and forth between the city and the reservations, Mr Jonkman explained He said the new center is the first major expansion of the churchs Indian ministry Salt Lake City since that ministry was established While the evangelist described the ministry as successful, he cited two problems the center hopes to alleviate Expresses Emphasis Weve always had an emphasis on Indian culture, but we feel that it should be expanded But until now, weve never had the facilities to expand that emphasis, Mr Jonkman said In addition, he said family breakups have been a problem in the Indian ministry The breakup of families is not only common among the Indians but to American society in general," he said As far as the Indian is concerned, this is partly due to Ch frustration of many to cope with city life after the relative security of reservation, Mr Jonkman said He said the ministry is combatting that problem through family counseling in the homes Besides that, he said, several families will participate in a family seminar to be held March Many Indians participating in the church program, soon after arriving in the city, live on poverty-level incomes, he said However, after adjstmg to the city, Mr Jonkman said, most families become economically stable and join A AMftfc TampM and mat 800th Stake Formed Organization of the 800lh stake in the Church of JeMis Christ of Latter-day Saints marked another milestone the churchs growth in January The church's 800th stake (comparable to a diocese) came in Veracruz, Mexico, hich was also the site of the churchs 700th stake a year and a half ago Organized in 1830 with six members, the church grew steadily but slowly, with 98 years passing before there were 100 stakes After that, growth was more rapid The second hundred stakes came in 24 vears, the third hundred eight years, the fourth hundred in four years, the fifth in six, the sixth in three and the seventh one hundred stakes were organized during a two-year penod Members of the church currently reside in approximately 88 countries and the church is rapidly approaching the four-million mark worldwide membership ST.
