A mediator of the Wisconsin Employment Relations Board, Madison, plans to meet with the union and company at an as yet undetermined time this week at the Rock County Courthouse, Local Secretary-Treasurer Wallace Federman said today. The dispute centers on wages, with a few fringe benefits also unsettled. The union and company have held off-and-on discussions since last October on the matter, and the local started picketing here at noon March 20. Since then pickets have expanded to Madison and Beloit operations, of the firm Federman said. He said the company is bringing employes from those sites to Janesville to do the work of the 17 striking members here.

He said a picket line may be established this week at the operations in Rockford, 111., for the same reason. Other than the proposed meeting with a mediator this week, Federman reported "basically no change in position" today. Both the union and company have stated "We are open for negotiations," though no meetings have been reported since walkout began 10 days ago on Jan. 5, when Fisher Body foreman Edward O'Brien was attempting to turn a 44 -volt switch box to the "off" position, according to Willard C. A sudden discharge of energy blew the metal switch box door open eniitting an arc of flame that burned O'Brien's face and head and ignited his upper clothing. The force of the energy knocked him to bis knees on a 10-foot high catwalk. Peterson was standing next to O'Brien when the accident occurred and sustained superficial bums on the right side of his head, face and neck as well as both forearms. He dropped to his knees when the switch box door blew open and crawled off the catwalk. Without regard to his burns and personal safety he too helped Arner and Ackerson extinguish O'Brien's burning clothing before gong to the medical department for treatment, Davey said.
