Cornwall Confident Of Notching First Win Over Beavers Tonight A scrappy and aggressive Cornwall Hifh School football team lifts the 1963 gridiron curtain tonight when they host the Beavers of Catholic High School at Lebanon High School Stadium in a Tri- County Football League contest. After three weeks of practice Coach Jim Bright his ninth Miner eleven with an optimistic view on the coming season. The Cornwall eleven will also be running from a pro-type offensive system. The Miners were 1-7-1 last year and winless in Tri-County League competition (in five games) but Bright has high hopes his team will be able to start the season on a winning note tonight and register its first conference win since 1961. Cornwall-Catholic series 28, Cornwall 7 1959-LCH3 12, Cornwall 27, Cornwall 2S, Cornwall T.

JO, Cornwall The Miners and the Beavers have met five times since the series was inaugurated in 1958 and the Beavers have won every contest. Bright believes his team has a good chance of up- letting the Norbic Danz coached eleven tonight. If that should happen Bright said the Miners could go on to their best gridiron season. The Miners enter the game in good physical condition, and Bright has been well pleased with the progress of hit eleven over the past weeks. Bright said, "These kids will make mistake! and we expect a few but, one thing is certain, they will go all out every minute of the game.

They're good defensive team. We are still noi as sharp with our offensive tim ing as we'd like to be but, with a new system being instituted it will take a few games until the timing is perfected." "We'll put up a good game tonight." Helping to brighten the out look for the Miners is the com petition for several starting Bright expecti to go tonight with Ed Sebastian or Barry Auman at left end, but whoever starts, the other will see plenty of action. Ed Kercher, a veteran, will get the call at left tackle, Larry DePugh, another letterman, will start at left guard and junior Paul Boyer will start at center. Veteran Bill Carpenter will open at right guard with letterman Doug Boyer at the right tackle slot. Paul Vranesic, one of the nine lettermen on the team, will get the call at right end.

The only definite starting back senior Roger Grimes who last year carried most of the Miner workload from his fullback spot. He will be found there again tonight. The quarterback spot could be 'illed by anyone of three players. Bob Engle, a senior, Tim Longnecker, another senior, and junior Frankhouser. The probable starter will be Engle but Bright could switch just before the kickoff to either Ixmgnecker or Frankhouser.

Longnecker could find himself in the left halfback slot for the Miners as he and Danny Deck and sophomore Terry Light have been battling for that position. In the right half or flanker spot Larry Light holds a slight edge over Walt Pruitt and Terry Light and could start in that postiion, However, Frank Gill is also in strong contention for the starting berth and could be a surprise starter for the Miners. The backfield battle has given Bright a chance to smile and it could be that the Miners have come up with an excellent array of backs that will add depth and strength to the Cornwall eleven's offensive attack. The majority of lettermen on the Miner eleven are on the forward wall. They have shown in pre-season workouts that they are capable of performing their duties.

With sharp, crisp blocking they could open the holes that will get their backs out and away and Bright is looking forward to having his linemen do just that tonight. The Miners in eight previous seasons have come up with 23-41-4 record, they are looking for their 24th win tonight. Pro Grid Preview Cleveland Browns To Open New Era Under Coach Blanton Collier Scholastic football bows In. for 1963 season at the Hershey Stadium tonight when the Milton Hershey School Spartans and the Hershey High School Trojans meet in the 21st annual Cocoa Bean Bowl. The Cocoa Bean series dates back to 1943, and was inaugurated by the Hershey Rotary Club as a project for the benefit of the Derry Township Memorial Field playground equipment fund, and has been continued ever since on an annual basis.

Spartans Lead Series The Hilltop Spartans hold the upper hand by a wide margin with a record of 13 wins against only four losses and three ties, and last' year handed the Trojans their only setback in CAC play in this rivalry series game. New Coach Bows The Spartans will be opening the season under a new coach, CLEVELAND, Ohio (UPI) A new era gets under way for the Cleveland Browns this year as a new head man Collier his hand to come up with a winner. Collier, a 56-year-old student of football, took over as head coach in January, succeeding Paul Brown, under whose guidance the roared to four AU-American Conference crowns and six consecutive Eastern Division titles in the National Football League. The Browns won their last title-in 1957. Brown will be missing from the field because he was booted upstairs to a vice presidency by youthful owner Art Modall.

The biggest problem facing Collier is coming up with a top-notch running mate for the incompara- able Jim Brown, who has gained 7,459 yards in six seasons. Brown has been the "Mr. Big" of the Browns' ground game, ripping to five consecutive league rushing crowns before being stopped last year. Twenty-seven exhibitions over the past four weeks have drawn more than 914,000 paying fans and the million mark should be surpassed handily in the closing six attractions, which include a doubleheader and the Hall of Fame game.

Minnesota's young Vikings and the St. Louis Cardinals open the NFL weekend tonight at St. Louis. On Saturday afternoon, the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles play at Princeton, and four more games are slated for Saturday Dallas Cowboys against the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Colts against the Chicago Bears in the doubleheader at New Orleans; the Green Bay Packers against the Washington Redskins at Cedar Rapids, lowaT and the San Francisco against the Rams at Los Angeles. The Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers meet ia the Hall el Fame fame Sunday at Canton, Gfcfe troit Lion, Ernie Green, a second- year man, and rookie Frank Baker, a 215-pounder from Toledo University, are battling for the halfback slot.

With the opening game but 10 days away, it looks as if Frank Ryan will be the starting quarterback. Ryan started slowly this spring but caught fire on the West Coast to push Jim Ninow ski into the back-up job. The new era also will see the quarterback doing most of the play-calling, although Collier plans to send in plays when the situation warrants it. Collier plans to employ a wide open offense, including such things as a double-wing, men in motion and receivers flooding one-side. He believes that "pro football can't be played conservatively." Makes Strong Bid Clifton McNeil of Grambling College is making a strong bid to win a berth as a pass receiver the strongest point on the team.

McNeil, a skinny-a a i youngster, possesses blazing speed and is sure-handed. Other youngsters who have good chance of making the team as receivers are rookie Tom Hutchinson, the Browns' No. 1 choice last December, and Gary Collins, former Maryland standout, now in his second year. Rich Kreitling, former Big Ten star, Ray Renfro, a 12-year man and Johnny Brewer aiso are standouts of the Browns' catching corps. Collier does not plan to do much tinkering with the defensive unit, which yielded only 257 points best in the Eastern Division last year.

He does, how ever, have to come up with a replacement for Don Fleming, who died in a construction mishap, Team To Beat Collier believes the defending champion New York Giants are the "team to beat," although he expects strong title battles from Pittsburgh, Washington, St. Louis and Dallas. "I expect the Browns to be contenders, but how well they do will depend upon development ol some of the replacements for players lost," Collier said.
