IN THE lesson for today, the Sunday before Christmas, the sweet stories of Jesus' birth are not included. Our attention is called instead to the prophecy of Isaiah concerning the coming: of the Christ, and to what that has meant to the world. Other babies were born on this day, but none who had such a profound effect upon the world. They were born, lived and died without the world being- cognizant of them, but His birth we celebrate in song, story, praise and thanksgiving-. "For unto us a child is born," sang Isaiah, "unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful.

Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father. The Prince of Peace." Under all these names has the Christ been worshiped. He is called Wonderful because, according to the meaning of the word. His coming xvas a miracle. He is our Counsellor, to whom we go in times of stress.

The terms Mighty God, and Everlasting Father signify His eternity. Although Jesus spoke of famines, pestilence ar.d wars, nations rising against nation, and s'aid He came not to bring peace, but a sword, nevertheless peace will come some time through Him, our Prince of Peace. Coming of John the Baptist From the prophecy of Isaiah wo turn to John, who tells us first of the coming of John the Baptist. the messenger of the Lord. "There was a man sent from God.

whose name was John. "The same came as a witness. to- bear witness of the Light (Jesus), that all men through Him might believe. "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that coraeth into the world. "He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Kim not.

"He came unto His own, arid Kis received Kim not. "But as many as received Him, them gave He power to become Distributed by King: sons of God, even to them that be- Heve on His name."
