RECREATION BASKETBALL SIXTH GRADE LEAGUE Yesterday's scores: VARMINTS (17) Cartney 5, Jayvees Drop 34.33Yerdict In Comedy In what resembled a TV wrests ling match more than basketball Titusville High's Jayvees last nigh were edged in the closing moments of a tight ball game at Warren as they lost to the Little' Dragons 3433. The loss gave the teams an even split since Titusville won here 33-26. In the early stages of the or gaine, Coach Char Port's lads couldn't buy a basket and fel behind 8-3. Actually the game, got out of hand and became a rather rough affair.

In the end it was Titusville's failure to hit in the opening moments that caused their downfall since they outscored Warren from the foul line but trailed from the field 13-11. THSShows Excellent Defense Some Local Fans Forced To Hear Game Via Radio It was do-or-die for TitusviUe High's fighting Rockets last night at Warren and they dooed it by whipping the Dragons 68 to 51 to stay, very much alive in the tight Section 2 race that now has the Rockets tied with Franklin at the top of the heap and Meadville only a half game behind. A rafter-hanging crowd of 800 was on hand figured to be a tight contest at Warren's Beaty gym. But instead of 'a and-tucker the partisan Dragon followers saw Titusville quickly open a substantial lead and hold it all the way to win in surprising; fash- ion. In addition to the crammed house, an estimated 300 fans never got inside the gym.

Some early- bird fans were in line at 4 p. m. and a busload of students from Titusville were finally ushered into classrooms where they listened to the game on radio. Perhaps the two main reasons for the Rockets' big victory was the fine all-around defensive play of the Shanermen that kept Warren's big guns, Nick Creola and Mike Cashman, tied up in knots most of the way. This, combined with a 25 of 60 shooting percent- age of .417, compared to War- ren's 20 for spelled the difference.

All the way around Titusville was a hot ball club. And not too much can be said 'for the substitute work of Tom. Fye and John Bedford as they filled in very capably when Fred Bloom and Joel Season got into foul trouble. Bloom finally left on five 4:15 remaining in the last period. Titusville's it a little hard to believe "as they saw the Scoreboard spin to 20-8 in the opening stanza.

Beason, Dewey and Ron Warner provided the spark with some excellent shooting, Dewey hitting four of the first five he took. The second quarter found a worried Coach Joe Massa shifting his defense zone to man-for-rnan then back to zone. This ma- neuver slowed the Rocket pace and enabled Warren to outscore our side 13-12. Still the Rockets' were ahead 32-21 at the rest pe- riod. Rockets Play It Cag? Shortly after the third period got under way fouls began to play a part in the contest.

Bloom had four and was benched. Dewey, Warner and Beason each had three and had to play.it cagy. Still the Rockets more than matched the now- desperate Dragons and came out on top 49-35 heading into the 'stretch. One-on-one fouls began to tell in last eight minutes. And since Titusville- had the lead Warren fouled consistently.

The last six ninutes saw the Shanermen sink L2 fouls in a row. This coupled with a ball-controll game to run out the clock took all the fire from the Dragons. In the scoring department Dewey took 21 shots and made 10. He added seven fouls or 27 points, most of the coming in timely situations. But despite Dewey's performance, this was a victory with all seven men slaying an equal part.

Dick Platt lit three buckets in the third period when the rest of Titusville's scoring effort seemed to slump Season really rode high-scoring Nick Creola, who got only 14 points with six of them coming in the ate moments. Dewey also caged Cashman, who could score only one field goal. Ron Warner played his usual fine floor game and chipped in with 16 points. And while not up in scoring, Fred Bloom got the necessary rebounds. Titusville will be idle Tuesday and will meet Franklin in another big one here Friday night.
