The French antidoping lab testing the American cyclist's samples determined that some of the hormone came from an external source. The New York Times reported the findings on its Web site Monday night, citing a person at the International Cycling Union with knowledge of the result. The finding undermines the defense that Landis has stood behind since he tested positive for an elevated ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone following the 17th stage of the Tour de France.

He staged a stirring comeback during the 17th stage in the Alps to make up for a poor performance the day before. Looking and sounding defiant, Landis said Friday that his body's natural metabolism not doping of any kind caused the result, and that he would undergo tests to prove it. "We will explain to the world why this is not a doping case but a natural occurrence," Landis said at a news conference in Madrid, Spain. But after determining thai Landis's ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone was more than twice the limit of 4:1, the lab performed a carbon isotope ratio test on the first of Landis's two urine samples, the person told the Times. That test determines whether the testosterone sample taken from Lanids is natural or synthetic.

Landis officially requested the testing of his backup urine sample Monday for an elevated testosterone ratio. If the test is negative, Landis would be cleared. If it's positive, which Landis' lawyers say they expect, he could be stripped of his Tour victory and banned for two years. The Times reported that Landis was in New York on Monday night and could not be reached for comment. American cyclist Floyd Landis is facing charges of blood doping.

MLB TRADE DEADLINE Maddux moves Cubs ship Maddux to Dodgers for Izturis, Soriano stays put By RONALD BLUM The Associated Press NEW YORK Greg Maddux was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the biggest deal before baseball's non-waiver trade deadline Monday while the Washington Nationals surprised some teams by holding onto Alfonso Soriano. A 327rgame winner and four-time Cy Young Award winner, Maddux waived his no-trade clause and accepted the trade to Los Angeles, who sent Gold Glove infielder Cesar Izturis to the Cubs. Chicago is giving $2 million to the Dodgers as part of the trade. Maddux, who spent his first seven seasons with the Cubs, returned to Chicago before the 2004 season after 11 years with the Atlanta Braves. He got his 300th win and strikeout with the Cubs.

"I am very surprised to be honest with you," Maddux said. "It came down to the last minute. I'm excited to be going to L.A., but at the same time sad about leaving Chicago. 1 need to try to get right with my new team and try to pitch well for them." Maddux started the season 5-0, but the 40-year-old right-hander has won only four games since and is 9-11 overall with a 4.69 ERA in 22 starts. "He's not what he was when he was winning Cy Young Awards, but we still think he has the ability to pitch and win games," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said.

"He's probably one of the smartest players I've ever been around. 1 think he'll find a way." Los Angeles, last in the tightly grouped NL West, also acquired shortstop Julio Lugo from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for minor league third baseman Joel Guzman and outfielder Sergio Pedroza Earlier, the Cubs traded infielder Todd Walker and $350,000 to San Diego for, minor league right-hander Jose Ceda. Soriano, an All-Star left fielder, is batting .286 with 32 homers, 64 RBIs and 26 stolen bases in his first season with Washington after coming over in a trade with Texas last offseason. "We felt the best deal we could make is AN(, I'hoto Top: The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired pitcher Greg Maddux from the Chicago Cubs on Monday. no deal.for the franchise," general manager Jim Bowden said. "He wants to stay in D.C. and did not want to be traded." Soriano, who million this year, can become a free agent after the season. "I'm happy," Soriano said. "It will be more easy to focus on playing every time because it passed.

I was very excited they wanted to keep me I love my teammates, too. I think they were happy to see me walk in here." While Soriano stayed put, there were 11 trades in all Monday, including four by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Teams can still make trades, but players must first pass through waivers. Patriots QB Brady also misses Monday workout The Associated Press Arizona rookie quarterback Matt Leinart stayed out of the sun Monday, as did veteran counterpart Tom Brady, who was mysteriously absent from workouts with the New England Patriots.

missed the first day of practice while contract negotiations went on between the Cardinals and representatives of the first-round pick. Brady, a two-time Super Bowl MVP, missed his third straight practice, but Patriots coach Bill Belichick didn't say why his quarterback wasn't on the field. "Guys that aren't out here, it's either because of their practice routine or they are day to day," he said. It was unclear which reason applied to Brady, who participated in all four practices on Friday and Saturday, the first two days of camp. He missed Sunday's single session and both of Monday's practices.

Arizona appeared close to a deal with Leinart when his agent, Tom Condon, came to Phoenix on Friday to meet with club officials. But Condon left after the sides didn't meet Sunday. "We want to get Matt in as quickly as possible," Condon said. "We're anxious to see him on the field." Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush, Leinart's teammate at Southern California, showed up at the Saints' training camp in Jackson, Miss. He is expected to practice Tuesday after undergoing a conditioning test.

Bush didn't expect his contract to get done quite so soon. "You never know when it's going to happen. It's like waiting to be called into the army," Bush said. "I'm just glad to finally be here. It's a business, but I knew we'd get it done soon.

I'm ready to go." As temperatures soared Monday during another sweltering heat 0 ave around the country, some NFL teams were taking steps to make things easier their players. The Chicago Bears only one practice on Monday and Tuesday and moved the time to 7 p.m., thus avoiding mid- 90s heat and sweltering humidity in Bourbonnais, 111. The might get a break on too, as'that practice could be" pushed back. "I'm sure they probably glad to get out of that heat a little'', bit," Bears coach Lovie Smith' said. "We would like to get good practice no matter what, and 1 the best way to do that is for the" players not to have to deal with'" the heat."
