Tristar Productions last week canceled TV promo- for the movie, but Steve Randall, senior vice president of marketing at Tristar, denied reports the film had been withdrawn from theaters. "There have been a couple of instances, mavbe three, in the Midwest where exhibitors decided they could no longer continue to show the film," Randell said.

"The picture doesn't present Santa as a killer. It's the story of a man who dresses as Santa Claus who is the murderer." Despite some objections, including picketing parents outside a Milwaukee theater, "Silent Night, Deadly Night" was a big hit in its first three days in 398 movie houses. The picture earned $1,432,800, making it the eighth most popular film in release last weekend. 'Police Academy 9 Sequel Set HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Nothing in Hollywood succeeds like excess, which explains why the bawdy, vulgar "Police Academy" has given birth to "Police Academy II." The original film, which starred Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, David Graf, Michael Winslow and Marion Ramsey, piled up $83.6 million in the United States for producer Paul Maslansky and Warner Bros. "Police Academy II" will star seven of the original cast along with newcomers Colleen Camp, Art Metrano and Bob Goldthwait.

with James Signorelli returning as director. NEW YORK (UPI) CBS won first place in the Nielsen ratings last week, and also was way ahead of the opposition in the Nielsen and Arbitron "sweeps." NBC, for the first time this season, was in third place the position it occupied for most of last season. The A.C. Nielsen prime-time ratings for the week ending Nov. 11 gave CBS a 17.7 rating and a 28 percent share of the audience, ABC a 14.9 rating with a 24 share and NBC a 14.1 rating with a 22 share.

On the season to date, CBS also has taken over the lead by a narrow margin, although NBC is still hanging in there. CBS has a 16.9 rating and a 27 share, while NBC holds a 16.6 rating and a 27 share and ABC has a 15.2 rating and a 24 share. In the "sweeps," in which Nielsen and Arbitron periodically survey viewing in individual local markets throughout the country, CBS so far leads the pack. The Arbitron figures give CBS stations a 16.9 rating and a 27 share, ABC a 15.4 rating and a 24 share, and NBC a 14.3 rating and a 23 share. Arbitron measurements began on Oct.

31 and end Nov. 27. In the Nielsen sweeps, CBS held a 17.5 rating and a 28 share, while ABC had a 14.9 rating and a 24 share and NBC wound up with a 14.3 rating and a 24 share. The Nielsen sweeps run from Nov. 1 through Nov.

28. "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" was the No. 1 evening news show for the 134th consecutive week, with a 12.8 rating and 22 share. ABC's "World News Tonight" had a 11.5 rating and a 20 share, while "NBC Nightly News" had a 10.6 rating and an 18 share. The top 10 prime-time shows for the week ending Nov.

11, according to the A.C. Nielsen were: I.Dallas (CBS) 2. Dynasty (ABC) 3. 60 Minutes (CBS) 4. Ellis Island, parti (CBS) 5.

(CBS) 10. Hotel (ABC) Dear Ann: I read about fortune-tellers in your column years ago and paid little attention. Then one of my friends went to a "trance medium." For $40 this woman recited several incidents from her past and present and also predicted the future. My friend assured me the trance lady was upbeat and positive and I had nothing to worry about. I called for an appointment, drove to the hotel room where she worked and gave her $40.

She went into a light trance and proceeded to tell me several things that would happen during the next 10 or 20 years. Most of the future she predicted was pleasant but one omission was particularly upsetting. When she awoke from her trance she asked if I had any questions. "What about children?" was all I could ask. I was 24, newly wed and had always wanted a family.

She closed her eyes for a minute, then informed me that she didn't see any children in my future. Ann, I was devastated. I cried all the way home and lived with a kind of aching sadness for the next year. I talked to several friends about it and their reassurances gave me some comfort. I promised myself if my story had a happy ending, I would share it with your readers to forestall other eager beavers from jumping into the same kind of trouble.

Thank God, I now have a happy, healthy, wonderful eight-month-old son. But believe me, my pregnancy was filled with anxiety and fear. For heaven's sake, if there is anyone out there who is tempted to go to a fortune-teller, save yourself the money, needless worry and pain. What will be, will be. Don't interfere with the Maker's natural scheme of letting life unfold one day at a time.

A Pox On All Prognosticates Dear Pox: Those gazers are awfully good guessers. Thanks for shattering their crystal balls. Dear Ann Landers: 1 have a problem. Can you please help? There is nobody I can ask. I am 15 years old and have a 12- year-old girlfriend.

She claims she is pregnant. Can this really be? We only had sex once. Can a girl get pregnant the first time? We were just seeing what it was like after watching a movie on cable TV. We are too young to be parents, aren't we? Please hurry with your answer. I need to know if it's possible and what to do.

Trouble In Metroplex Dear Metroplex: It IS possible for a 12-year-old girl to become pregnant the first time she has sex. You should both tell your parents at once and decide together on the best course of action for all concerned. Dear Ann Landers: Here's the perfect solution for the woman whose husband refused to take a shower. I know the type. That slob will never take a shower unless his wife makes it interesting or fun.

I suggest that when SHE takes a shower she invite him to join her. No man will turn that down! An Original Thinker In Michigan Dear Michigan: Your "original" thought was shared by at least 500 others. Thanks to all who wrote. The suggestion is certainly worth a try. VIDEO MOVIE WEEK-END Low-Intensity Exercise Can Be Very Beneficial DEAR DR.

LAMB I have read that to get the best results from an exercise program, one has to build up one's heartbeat and continue to exercise for approximately 30 minutes. I do stretches and ride'a stationary bicycle for approximately eight miles at 20 mph. This takes me about 20 minutes. I do not have the stamina to continue any longer. Does this mean that I am wasting my time because I do not continue for 30 minutes? I'm 52, 5 feet 4 and weigh 140.

My weight has been steadily increasing for the past 10 years. I try to watch my diet. I do eat out a lot, but do not add additional salt to anything and do not eat dessert. I have a sedentary job but I do run up the stairs as often during the day as I can manage, probably 10 to 12 times. Would any other type of program be more beneficial to me? DEAR READER I suspect that those pat rules that you must exercise so long or keep your heart rate at 60 to 80 percent of its maximum have done a lot to discourage people who really can benefit from less strenuous efforts.

Your letter is a typical example. Of course, you don't have to exercise for 30 minutes before you get any benefit from it. Let me use an extreme example. A person who has been confined to bed for a couple of weeks may find that just walking to the bathroom takes considerable effort; that effort is training. Training means exercising enough to increase your ability above its present level.

Patients who have been in bed rest are trained by increasing their ability to walk down the hall. They certainly don't walk for 30 minutes. As they get better and their stamina imprcves, they can walk farther and farther, Health By Lawrence Lamb, M.D. and that is training. What you should do depends on your goal.

In your case, it sounds as if you want to lose weight. To do that, you might do better by decreasing the intensity of your exercise, but exercising longer. It takes a long time for the body to start mobilizing fat during exercise. The body doesn't reach its peak ability to do this until four hours after the exercise has begun. This is one reason that a low- intensity effort, such as walking, is so helpful in eliminating body fat: You can walk long enough to really get the fat to start mobilizing.

Initially, when you exercise, your muscles use carbohydrates specifically, muscle glycogen that is already stored in your muscles. Then the liver starts adding to the carbohydrate for your muscles by releasing glucose, which your circulation carries to your muscles. Fatty acids are added to the mixture slowly until, finally, after four hours of exercise, they are a major source of the energy being used. Another point is that frequent small amounts of exercise help stimulate your body to produce heat. Calories are eliminated from the body mostly as heat, not as mechanical effort.

I'm sure you will want to read The Health Letter 15-12, Exercise Wise, which I am sending you to explain other points you need to know. Others who want this issue can send 75 cents with a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope for it to me in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019. Eliminating calories is far more important than eliminating salt. Salt does not contain any calories and doesn't contribute to developing or maintaining body fat.

THE HUNT IS ON The month of November in Cass and White counties will see about 2,000 dogs and 1,000 owners take to the fields day and night. This is an annual event for hunters of rabbits, game birds, and raccoon. Old blue the favorite coon-hound has waited all year for this event and is ready to go. (Is he really?) The hunting dog is an athlete that requires special care. One cannot rest him nine months out of the year and expect him to perform to the top of his ability.

Our practice will see as many as 50 hunting dogs in critical condition due to heartworms, intestinal parasites, distemper, parvo-virus, and malnutrition. Fortunately most will survive to hunt another season, but almost all could be prevented. All hunting dogs should have a physical exam, fecal exam, heart worm check, and vaccinations before hunting season begins. This may not only save the life of the dog but may also save expensive treatments and the loss of that animal for the season. For those who do hunt please keep this seasqn safe for yourself, your loved ones, and for your four legged companion.
