frifitfrt OCB I -J A War MasqUerader By bUDLEV CHADBOURNE During the second year of the aw ful world war I went to Canada and enlisted there in the Canadian infantry. In due time the regiment sent to Flanders and participated lu the fighting that resulted from the German to occupy CalnU, was early made a noncommissioned officer and by the beginning of the third year of the war commanded my company. ThlS was due to the fact that the officers were killed off and I was In line for promotion. During the Brut great retreat of the mean the one of March, regiment was among those that wore pushing the enemy as it foil back. One night, as wo were hanging on the German rear, out of the darkness came a man, running for iloar life, followed by shots from the eastward.

After getting into our Hues and recovering breath from his run he told us in broad Yorkshire dialect that be had been living in Germany when the war "opened, had been forced to Join tho army and had been long watching for an opportunity to Join Ms own countrymen. Ho wished te enlist at once and fight for tho allied cause. I reported tho case to headquarters mid was directed to enlist the man In my company. I did so, and ho Joined uri under tho nitmo of Georgo Calkins. Ho seemed quite willing to do vvlial wns required of him, but showed great stupidity.

He explained his Inability to.understand our way of doing things liy saying that nil he know about mill tary mutters ho hnd learned from Ger- instructors. Of courBC- In such flKhtinR us was taking place lit tho tlrno there was great disorder. Men were disappearing from the ranks every day, many of thorn unaccounted for. I missed Calkins, but did not lonrn. whether he litid been killed or wounded or was simply among the throng of missing.

My regiment, being on the extreme sooth of the British line, would occasionally get mixed In the heat of battle with the Erench troops. One day when one of our many attacks on the Germans had been repulsed and we were being driven back In some disorder, mingling with a number of French troops, I found myself retreat Ing by the side of French soldlei who looked enough like Calkins to bfl Ills twin brother. Being sure that he was Calkins himself, said to him: "Hollo. Calkins! I thought you we dead." Ho was about to reply when one of 1 his comrades sold something to him, to which ho replied In the French Ian Ruage. Iloro was a uncouth, stupid Yorkshire man who spokfl French.

Considering that he had come to us from tho enemy, I ut oncq grew suspicious and would have wara ed his French comrades against him hud there been any opportunity to do so. But when heavy fighting Is going on opportunities to do ordinary things are not likely to occur. Before I could suy anything more to Calkins or to any 'one about him, presto, a force from the rear was pushed forward to cover our retreat! We were gathered in and shoved toward the enemy. The next time I crossed Calkins' path was one night when word was passed that the brigade to which my regiment belonged was about to attack a weak spot lu the German It was reported to the officers that a Massachusetts Yankee who had been caught in Germany when the war broke out had rorne through their lines and had told of some ground they occupied in which a mere corporal's guard had been left to keep fires burning whllo their comrades were retreating. Tho general commanding ordered an attack made, tinder the Yankee's guidance, on this evacuated position.

While we were forming for the purpose our guide was pointed out to me. What was my astonishment to see Culkins! It occurred to me that the mun, whether English, French or Yankee, wns a German' spy and was about tp lead us Into a trap. I approached tjlm and heard him speaking to the officer who was to lead the attack, and he used the dialect of a Massachusetts farmer. He had not noticed my approach, and I suddenly called from behind him: "CalUlns!" He turned, and, seeing me, all color left his face. "General," I said to the officer lie was talking to, "4f yoij Callow that man to the enemy's lines you'll never return." I then gave an account how the man had come in as a deserter from the enemy, how he had enlisted in my company, how he had pretended stupidity.

Then I told of having met blm amoug the French. Mr. Calkins, Yorksblremau, alias Mr. Peabody, never heard French searched, and valuable Information as to the allied armies was found on his person. It was his intention to lead us to attack what proved to be one of the enemy's strong? est positions.

He had within ten days been serving with, several different 8r- mics of the allies and bad returned et least once to the Germans-with. Information. Neither glde paid much regard to the trial of spies, and Mr. Calkins, who uad been bom in pngjanfl German 9 ana fof tfs 1 Hi AUCTION SALE DESIRABLE BUILDING LOTS At the Hershey Highlands Thursday and Friday, August 9-10, 1917 Hershey Highlands are located right in Hershey, the garden spot of Central Pennsylvania.
