Wednesday, July 28,1993 Herald-Zeitung 9 Arts and entertainment Elizabeth Elliott Spotlight Kenneth Branagh You won't find him listed in our local directory, And I know, you expect me to focus on home folks in the arts, But 1 feel compelled to let you know about a joyous experience waiting for you, if you haven't yet seen "Much Ado About Branagh's ingenious filmed version of Shakespeare's ages-old comedy. It is nothing short of brilliant! Undoubtedly, because the way it's been directed, lets one thoroughly enjoy the famous playwright without finding it necessary to understand every word. The plot and the meaning of every actor's speech is quite clear. You know the schemes and feelings of each character and can't help but get caught up in the mischeif. My youngest daughter is atorderline retardate (I believe they say "mentally challenged" these days).

She grinned and chuckled through the whole show, and never have I seen such lively conversation from her before, following a movie. Branagh himself is delicious! Funny, romantic, expressive of wonder- ful energy, and easy on the eyes! Beside himself and his fine actress wife, Emma Thompson, he's peopled his film with the imaginative casting of some unlikely stars? Dense! Washington, Michael Keaton (of "Batman" fame) and Kearm Reeves. It's showing now at the Crossroads Cinema in Without nudity, violence, sex, or foul language, it manages to be exciting! Go! I dare you to be disappointed. Those live-wire seniors They've caught the acting bug! Forming a drama club, called J.KXY.Creative Arts Group, they're planning their first presentation for the Senior Center. and September 19 at 1p.m. So mark your calendars for a fun time! By the way J.O,Y. stands for Just Over Youth! If they get any livelier over tiierc, the "youth" won't be able to keep up with them! Thought for the day or any time you need it. In Richard Bach's insightful and enlightening book, "Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant there can be found this reassuring tidbit: "Here's a test to find whether your mission on earth is finished: If you're alive, it isn't" Project WILD set for Aug. 7 The City of New Braunfels parks and Recreation Department will be offering a free Project WILD workshop for adult youth leaders and teachers on August 7,1993 from 9 a.m.

South Street 625-7243 Public Welcome Pictorial history of County due out this fall By JENNIFER ROMPEL Staff Writer Copies of New Braunfels, Comal County, Texas: A Pictorial History are expected to be available for purchase this fall. Officials at the Sophienburg Museum and Archives are expecting to have the book back from the publishing company in October or November. The museum is currently developing methods to promote early sales of the book. Books can be pre-purchased at a reduced cost of $29.95.

Regular cost after the books are delivered will be $34.95. Sophienburg officials anticipate release of first definitive work on Comal County in 30 years Clyde Blackman, director of the museum, said approximately $8,000 worth of books have been sold. This amounts to more than 200 books. Blackman said a total of 3,000 books will be available for sale. The museum has been in the process of developing the book since last year.

Blackman said the decision was made to publish the book because no definitive work had been done on New Braunfels since 1968. "This is the first pictorial history," he said. Ten sponsors provided the funds for the up front costs of having the book published. Each sponsor donated $1,572.75. The remaining money needed will be $4,718.25 per sponsor.

However, the museum- is hoping to sell enough books in the pre-sale to avoid any additional costs from the sponsors. The sponsors are Becker Motor Citizens Bank, Hoffmann Agencies, Natural Bridge Caverns, Pit Stop Food Markets, Plaza Bank of New Brauiv fels, Victoria Bank and Trust of New Braunfels, Wurstfest Association, Zoeller Funeral Home and the Sophienburg Museum and The total cost of publishing the book is $62,910. After these costs are recouped, the museum hopes to make an additional $30,000 to be used to publish a book for the city's sesqui-; centennial. The book will be 192 pages with! 300 photos and approximately 30,000 words of text. The authors of the book are museum volunteers Myra Lee Goff and Rosemarie Gregory.

In May 1862 Julius Habermann, a shoemaker, bought acre lot 12 from Margaretta Ullrich, wife of Wagon Master George Ullrich and one of the first women to cross the Guadalupe River. Half of the lot was later deeded by his sons, Albert and Rudolph, to their sister Elvira for the care and education of a minor sister.

This part of Lot 12 is presently being readied by the Methodist Church for parking space. Julius build a fackwerk and cut limestone house on the other half of his lot. Much of the interior decor has been maintained, so that the craftsmanship of these early builders can be appreciated today. After his death, it became the property of his son Albert. On Nov.

10, 1900 Ida Clementine Habermann, Julius' youngest daughter, married William Tolle. In January 1901 they bought the house her father had built from her brother, Albert. Mrs. Tolle lived there until her death in May 1958.On Oct. 18,1958 the house was purchased by Chas William and Alma Schubert, retired farmers.

In November 1974, Lavetta Wallace bought the house from their heirs and has spent much of her time maintaining the original integrity of the home. This home has been on tour and is very representative of houses built in that period of New Braunfels history.
