m. Basis for Thanksgiving By CHARLES A. WELLS The spirit of Thanksgiving goes much deeper than feasting and celebrating. It is the sense of responsibility and stewardship that prompts us to recognize the goodness of God as the source of our abundance. We recognize that we are blessed as we comply laws governing the fruits of nature.

The Pilgrim Fathers were thankful, for they recognized God as the source; they were close to these laws and knew the necessity of thrift, perseverance and responsibility. Thus they were self-reliant and independent. Today many people have lost all sense of working with God; Thanksgiving is a pause for gratification and satiation. Such people are in reality terribly dependent; they usually have a torturing sense of insecurity, for they are out of touch with the basic laws through which God works. Thanksgiving is best spent in a grateful renewal of our obligations to God.
