Sunday, December 4, 1983 Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana Page Young People LHS Industrial Arts Program Offers Students Useful Skills BY MELISSA HAYDEN and JOE BENNETT Logansport High School Logansport High School offers an excellent industrial arts program where many useful skills can be learned. Though many students are led to believe that industrial arts courses are of no importance to their futures, these courses deserve a second look. There are 17 industrial arts classes offered, covering such fields as electricity, power and transportation, printing, mechanical drawing, power mechanics, machine shop, general and themal metals, woodshop and plastics. Skills learned in these classes can be used by the student in the future to perform many tasks that will usually save time and money instead of having them done by a repairman or business firm. In woodshop, for example, the basic fundamentals of woodworking are learned, as well as proper care of hand tools and operation of power machines.

Book binding, reading and drawing blueprints, arc welding, turning metal on a lathe, and the planning of circuitry for a three bedroom home are just some of the many practical skills learned through the industrial arts program. David Klaiber teaches the power mechanics course which involves testing equipment for engine tune-up and trouble diagonosis in automobiles. Students study all components of their automobiles including gasoline and diesel engines, carburization, fuel-ignition, lubrication, cooling, batteries, starters and chassis. This actual labor work is helpful to familiarize students with autos and they are actually working on real cars as auto mechanics would. Before the actual mechanic work begins, the first four weeks in the class are spent acquainting students with lab equipment and safety procedures for shop activities.

After the introduction, students are in the classroom only one day a week discussing projects and watching demonstrations. Klaiber feels that book work is also important. "Students must understand why something must be done a certain way and not just go through the motions of a job," he said. He also said it is important for everyone to at least have a basic knowledge of their vehicle if for nothing else than consumer awareness. Upon graduation from high school, many jobs are open for students with solid backgrounds in the field of autoniotive repair, as well as other industrial arts fields.

Klaiber stresses that application of good work and safety habits are always welcomed by employers. The industrial arts program offered at LHS can be a valuable means to save money and time, and increase efficiency for any student who takes advantage of the program. A solid beginning education in any of these fields can also be helpful for post-high school employment.
