Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, Indiana, Monday, May 29,1995 PageAS School Baoe Editor AVQ UAYo The United States Achievement Academy announced recently that Travis Albright and Jim Taylor have been recognized for academic achievement as United States National Honor Roll Award winners. Albright, who attends Caslon High School, and Taylor, who attends Pioneer High School, will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally. Taylor won the honor in the history and government category, and was nominated by his teacher, Erik Riise. Albright is the son of Glen and Vicki Albright, and the grandson of Paul and Levellia Piercy, and Bill and Bonnie Albright, Logansport. Taylor is the son of Fred and Connie Taylor, and the grandson of James and Mary Hayden, and Ruby Taylor and the late Fred Taylor, all of Rt.

6, Logansport. The honor roll provides honor students with many benefits and services and is a tribute to a student's dedication, talent and ability. Eastiawn Spelling Bee Winners lamed 20th Eastlawn Spelling Bee was held recently, as the top spellers in third, fourth and fifth grades competed. All students spelled in the building bee with the last two contestants at each grade level being named the top spellers for that grade. Shane Rentfrow, fifth-grader, was named the Eastlawn champion, with Crystel Whiteman, fifth-grader, taking second place, and Sean Keay, fifth-grader, placing third.

The grade level champions were Nick Saylor and Megan Boiler, third grade; Kellie Reiff and Katie Barnes, fourth grade; and Shane Rentfrow and Crystel Whiteman, fifth grade. Their names have been added to the spelling bee plaque located in the main hall. Other students participating were Maria Whiteman, Blake Snodgrass, Tyler Dilley, Brandon Ruff, James Berkshire, Stacy Nethercutt, Amanda Saylor and Monica Barfield. in On Saturday, May 6,13 students from Lincoln Middle School participated in the Hoosier Academic Super Bowl in Bremen. The science team consisted of Mark Leeman, Brendan Granger and Anthony Perfetto, seventh grade; and Kim Gordon and Jared Kingery, eighth grade.

They placed second out of 14 teams. The English team consisted of members Brooke Bailey, seventh grade; and Danielle Hettinger and Kim Lewis, eighth grade. They placed third. The social studies, mathematics and interdisciplinary teams also helped Lincoln to finish with a tie for seventh-place overall. These teams consisted of some of the above students and Lynly Hall, seventh grade, and Eric Spoor, Rhett Miller, Jodie Angle and Allison Corn, eighth grade.

The challenging questions were based on the theme of the environment and required intensive study that had to be done in addition to regular classroom work. The coaches were Richard Cottrell, math; Bobbi Fisher, social studies; Dennis Crum, English; and Vicki Onstott, science. Evan Eckart, Logansport, an entering freshman at the University of Evansville, has been awarded a chemistry scholarship. He is the son of the Rev. Daniel and Laurie Eckart, Logansport.

Eckart plans to major in premedicine. The University of Evansville is an independent, United Methodist Church-affiliated institution located in southwestern Indiana. It has five colleges and schools, including a campus at Harlaxton College in England. Fourth-Graders Design Grocery Bags You will soon be bringing your groceries home in a beautiful grocery bag designed by Winamac and West Central fourth-graders. They participated in an Earth Day contest sponsored by the Pulaski County Soil and Water conservation District.

Contest winners from Eastern Pulaski Elementary are Morgan Malek, first place; Erica White, second place; and Cheryl Field, third place. West Central winners are Nichole Thompson, first place; Kim Fritz, second place; and Casie Conley, third place. Contest winners were awarded an Earth Dayk T-shirt. Dave's IGA in Francesville and Sander's IGA in Winamac donated the grocery bags. Gaiveston Elementary School Galveston Elementary School named the following students to the honor roll for the fifth six-weeks: Grade Marley Griffin.

Arnold Ail Saints Middle School recently heid its annual Poetry Tea for parents and teachers. Andrea Lahmann recites her poem, which she wrote, titled Nature's Lafimann was one of 26 students to recite poems. Columbia Elementary School Announces Poster Contest Winners Columbia Elementary School Had a poster contest and students drew pictures advertising the Carnival, which was held April 22. The winners from each class received free tickets to be used at the carnival. First place winners were: Courtney Cunningham, Israel Putnam, Dean Dilts, John Rinehart, Lauren Deitrich, Ashley James, Dusty Rowan, Alex Anderson, Austin Hughes, Sandra Martinez, Dustin Cotner, Brittney Gellinger, Jesus Resenders, Melissa Crispen, Ashley Wilson, Michael Thomas, Blake Musselman, Peter Brucato, and Eric Smith.

Third Peru, Lindsay is active as the student council associate representative, Golden Guard, Spanish Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and English Hoosier Academic Super Bowl, She is on the Science Olympiad State Qualifying Team and is editor of the Narcissus, the school yearbook.

Lindsay is a member of Quill and Scroll and pep club, and runs varsity track and is a varsity cheerleader. She volunteers at the Salvation Army and the Miami County Museum. After'graduation, she plans to attend Johns Hopkins University of Health Sciences in Baltimore, and major in premedicine, She would like to become a surgeon. The daughter of Donald and Janice Fern, Rt. 2, Peru, Melissa has been active as a cheerleader for three years, tennis team for three years, Fellowship of Christian Athletes for two years, Golden Guard for one year and Student Council for two years.

Her other activities have been Drama Club for one year, French Club for two years, pep club for two years, yearbook staff photographer for one year and Future Business Leaders of America for three years. Melissa is in the top 10 percent of her class. She is involved in the United Methodist Youth Fellowship and is a student photographer for the Peru Daily Tribune. After graduation, she plans to attend college and study advertising or medicine. The daughter of Peter and Rosemary Redmon, of Rt.

2, Peru, Inger is busy with Golden Guard and swing choir. This year, she had a supporting role in the school play, "Fiddler on the Roof," She is employed at the local radio station as a disc jockey and as a car-hop at the hot dog stand. Inger attends First Presbyterian Church in Peru. After high school, she plans to attend Indiana University in Bloomington for business. The daughter of Doug and Rosemary Rice, of Rt.

2, Peru, Lauren has been involved in French Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Golden Guard, Pep Club, Student Council, volleyball, basketball and tennis. Lauren is a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. During the summers, she is involved with the Caston Basketball League, Peru Volleyball League, summer tennis and AAU Basketball. After high school, she plans to attend college, but is undecided on a major. The daughter of Galen and Vickie Ash, Rt.

2, Peru, Gayle is a member of Drama Club, German Club, Lindsay Hendricks Girls State Delegate Melissa Fern Girls State Delegate Inger Redman Girls State Delegate Lauren Rice Girls State Delegate Gayle Ash Girls State Delegate Marcie Layman Girls State Alternate Ryan Hopper Boys State Delegate Jeremiah Johnson Boys State Delegate band, swing choir and Tri-M. She has been selected as a drum major for the band next year. Her other activities include ballet and jazz classes and the Peru Circus. Gayle attends Parkview United Methodist Church and is an active member of the youth group and teaches Sunday school. She plans to attend college and major in nursing with a goal of being a pediatric nurse practitioner.

Hoosier Girls State alternate is Marcie Layman. The daughter of Don and Cindy Layman, 407 E. Fifth Peru, Marcie is involved in ballet, tennis and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also has been involved in cheerleadiiig for several years, She attends First Assembly of God Church, where she teaches Sunday school to four- and five-year-olds. After high school, she plans to attend Central Bible College in Missouri to study children's ministry.

Hoosier Boys State delegates are Ryan Hopper and Jeremiah Johnson. The son of Dr. Raymond and Debbie Hopper, 55 Raccoon Road, Peru, Ryan is active in Pep Club, Weightlifting Club, Science Olympiad, football, basketball and baseball. He plans to attend college and medical school, The son of Wally and Paula Johnson, of 416 N. Broadway, Jeremiah is junior class treasurer.

He is active in TV Club, the school newspaper, Student Council, Pep Club, Weightlifting Club, football, basketball and baseball. He plans to attend college and pursue a career in Louis Grossi II Boys State Alternate Jim Metealf Hi Boys State Alternate broadcasting. Hoosier Boys State alternates are Jim Wletcalf III and Louis Grossi II. The son of Fred and Janet Metcalf, of 1164 Veach Court, Peru, Jim is active in basketball, AAU basketball, and his church youth group. He plans to attend college, play basketball and study to be an engineer or architect.

Grossi, of 361 W. Fifth Peru, is active in Speech Team, Spell Bowl, Golden Guard, Future Business Leaders of America, French Club, the school newspaper, Quill and Scroll, National Forensics League and Academic Super Bowl. He attends St. Charles Church. After graduation, he plans to attend Columbia University in New York City to study law and political science.

He would like to become a corporate or constitutional lawyer in New York City and then pursue a career in politics..
