The task of preparing the offense which the 1930 Corn- Imakers will use in their pigskin campaign got under way at Memorial stadium Friday. The morning workout started with a chalk talk, during which Coach Dana X. Bible outlined a few plays. This was followed by a session on the gridiron with members of the coaching staff demonstrating the formations. The athletes themselves were running through the plays in the afternoon, mixing the drill in offensive tactics with the usual session of line and backfield fundamentals. Plotting Aerial Offensie. Although Coach Bible and his aides would not commit themselvej, the hint has been dropped that the Nebraska team oi 1930 will do considerable flipping of forward passes. Bible branched out in this lint* of attack last, year and is said to be planning to instruct his quarterbacks to do even more of it thus season. The pruning-down process, therefore, will not take place until following the inter-varsity game, Saturday, Sept. 20. Varsity prospects were looking up a trifle Friday with the indication bv Jim Gilbert, letterman and guard of last season, that he would report for practice. Gilbert anil Maasdam. Gilbert checked out a suit, but declared his final decision hinged on ht.s ability to find enough time on his scholastic schedule to permit his participation in the grid sport. Gilbert i# enrolled in the geology department which includes a program of afternoon laboratory work and Saturday field trips. Felber Maasdam, veteran center was in suit Friday and busy denying he would not be among the list of available» for the 1930 team. Maasdam, who reiKirted earlv this week considerably under weight, had picked up three pounds and appeared to be rounding into condition. Roby Coming Rack. The backfield outlook also was considerably brightened with the announcement John Roby was due in Lincoln late Friday night and that the Nelson boy had a good chance to clear the scholastic hurdle. Roby, a star in intrr- scholastic circles, was one of the speed merchants in the freshman backfield last season. Saturday will find the Comhusk- ers holding "open house” at the Memorial stadium This i.s one of the days th epublic is invited to sit In on the practice sessions. Coach Bible, however, indicated the fans would see little more than fundamentals this weekend Wednesday Scrimmage. The program will be improved as the season progresses, with the opening scrimmage booked for next Wednesday and a game between two varsity teams carded for the following week. Members of the coaching staff and varsity squad attended a dinner at the University club Thursday evening and later were guests of Charles Shire at the Stuart theater. The squad was the guest of the Hotel Cornhusker at a Friday luncheon. Qood Qolf.
