Commission for a the bunters but apply. HUSKERS 'SHORT' Big Eight scene By CHARLIE SMITH UPI Sports Writer Little did Jimmy Burrow anyone connected with Nebraska football. While Nebraska is opening know the price of suiting up and standing on the sidelines with the Nebraska football team on Jan. 1,1973. One thing Jimmy did know - he was ineligible to play, Both Jimmy and defensive tackle Dean Gissler accompanied the team to Miami for the 40-6 romp over Notre Dame. They were ineligible, but it was a reward for serving on the scout squad all year and being knocked around by the regulars. Nebraska did. the same thing after last season, allowing quarterback Vince Ferragamo and defensive end Ray Phillips to go to the Sugar Bowl, although both were Ineligible to play after transferring." An unfortunate thing hap: pened for Nebraska, however, when a television camera panned the bench and Ferragamo was singled out. Someone who saw that knew there was an NCAA rule forbidding an ineligible player to accompany the team to a bowl gaine. As a result, all four players now will miss Saturday's opening game against Louisiana State in Lincoln. Burrow would have started at safely. "I guess I'llhave a nice seat in the stands," says Burrow. "I'd like to stay on the sidelines with the rest of the team, but I don't know if I can do that." Burrow and the others appealed the NCAA decision this swnmer, but were ruled against in an Omaha court. "It's a shame something as minor as this had to be pleaded in a courtroom," says Burrow. "And il's too bad that the least responsible persons had to be the ones to be punished." The players, obviously, did not know the rule. Neither did Head Coach Tom Osborne or the season before its 75th consecutive sellout crowd of 76.000-plus at home, six other Big Eight Conference teams also will be in action. The schedule Rends Oregon Lo Oklahoma, Wichita State to Oklahoma State, California to Colorado, Iowa State. to UCLA, Washington State- to Kansas and Kansas State to Tulsa in a night game. Missouri began proceedings last Monday night 2057 upset victory uver Alabama in Birmingham, serving notice the "conference will be as rugged as ever. Osborne vigorously opposed the NCAA ruling which sidelined the four players for one game. "They acted like they were doing us a favor," he says: "The word I got was that they were:: considering ,.a much stiffer penalty.4ú 1: 1 Osborne maintains the penalty could be much stiffer than one game, especially for Ferragamo, who is battling Terry Luck for the starting quarterback position. Should Luck perform well against LSU, Ferragamo may never be able to unseat him as the starter. Youngsters 8-13. DO Something Worthwhile
